| I need to move old BX cable for a switch and outlet in a closet that's going from single door to double doors. Walls are the old pre-drywall 7/8 thick 2-part concrete-like stuff (early 1900's house).
The BX will be a bit too short for the new location, so I would like to use romex, but wondering about how to connect/ground the downstream BX to the closet light if I use a portion of romex? One option, if acceptable, is that I could install a metal junction box high on the the inner closet for both ends of the BX to pass through, and run the romex portion for the switch (and connecting the ground wire to the box). Is this doable? Thanks.

| All splices MUST be done in an accessible, approved box. You can't use what's sometimes called a "flying splice" where the two cables are attached and left to hang in the wall. In your case you'd bring the old BX into a metal junction box using the appropriate clamp. If there is a bonding strip in the cable, then that gets folded back under the clamp. If not, just use the clamp. Then you'd bring the NM-B (Romex) into the box, again with the appropriate clamp (which will be different than the one you used for the BX). The bare ground wire from the Romex gets attached to the box with a screw. Then make up your hot and neutral connections with wire nuts. |
