What scale or range button is pushed, or what is the dial setting on the selector switch.

Some newer meters are auto-ranging.
What you see on the display is what the value is.

I agree with Don... but it was a little ambiguous.

If this is a watt-hour meter, the multiplier should be labeled on the face of the meter, and also match that indicated on the electric bill.

I use to have that type of meter in an old house myself - the multiplier was some sort of weird number like 4.7 to get the actual usage.
