Convert a wall vanity light to a plug in

Posted by mazelady (My Page) on

I bought a vanity light not realizing how expensive and difficult it would be to install where I want it.

Now I'm wondering if I can just add a wire and plug-in and use it that way instead.

What supplies do I need to do this and can I do this myself?

RE: Convert a wall vanity light to a plug in

Surface-mounted lights like you describe almost always need to be mounted on a box in the wall because the splices for the wires must be enclosed and protected. If you just connect up the lamp wires to an extension cord and hang it on the wall, you will have an installation that violates the wiring code and possibly poses a shock and fire hazard. If you can't install this one properly, please be safe and buy a light that already has a cord and is intended to be mounted and used that way.
