I Need Room In My Breaker Panel.

I just bought a home that was built in 1979 with a 200 amp siemens 20 space load panel, My problem is that I want to hook up my hot tub that I had in my old home and there isn't any room left in the panel. The panel is full of piggyback breakers so that isn't a choice. I talked to an electrician about putting a new panel with 40 spaces and his estimate was $800.00 labor and materials. I was wondering instead of going this route why couldnt I put a sub panel in?

A subpanel will work and is a common solution (I've done it myself). You install a new subpanel adjacent to the existing panel. You move a couple of circuits out of the the old panel into the subpanel to make room for the feeder breaker and add your new breaker for the spa.

Note there are special wiring rules for spas. If you are not familiar with article 680 and these special requirements, I suggest you seek professional help. Screwing around with electricity on equipment where you are going to immerse your loved ones in is no place for amateurs.
