Advice wanted on weatherproofing a low voltage wite

I have an Orbit irrigation system that I use for drippers in my raised beds. It consists of a battery powered digital timer which has a small valve connected to it by a wire that ends in something that looks like an RCA jack. A relative was "helping" with gardening and managed to chop through the wire with a spade. The valve unit can't be taken apart to do a repair inside the housing, so I intend to solder the two severed pieces of wire back together. However, I don't know the best way to weatherproof the splice. Suggestions, please...

You can buy both weatherproof wire terminals as well as goop to seal up things at the electrical section of your home center. Soldering is not required.
