Advice wanted on weatherproofing a low voltage wite

I have an Orbit irrigation system that I use for drippers in my raised beds. It consists of a battery powered digital timer which has a small valve connected to it by a wire that ends in something that looks like an RCA jack. A relative was "helping" with gardening and managed to chop through the wire with a spade. The valve unit can't be taken apart to do a repair inside the housing, so I intend to solder the two severed pieces of wire back together. However, I don't know the best way to weatherproof the splice. Suggestions, please...
