| Im wiring a 1 HP 220v pool pump located next to my house and 25'+ from the pool water.My plan is to run 12-2 UM w/ground to a PVC junction box inside my unfinished bsmt before I punch outside.The pool pump circuit will come off the main(2 pole 20 AMP GFCI breaker) into a 2 pole Intermatic timer and run 40' to the junction box.
My question is can I switch over to THWN from the junction box go through the wall into PVC tubing down to the poolpump outlet(mounted on side of house),220 V 20 AMP rated twistlok receptacle and 3' SJ cord into poolpump motor?? The reason being is Id have to drill through the foundation to account for the 3' requirement of the cord. Thanks for any responses |

| Everything should be fine except: -SJ cord is not rated for damp locations only. Can't be used in wet locations. -Depending on your Code, you may be restricted to having the pump motor wired using flexible conduit only. (IRC electrical provisions permit twist-lock cords on permanently installed above ground pools only.) |

| I think the term "SJ cord" is generic for flexible cord. Most cords like this are typically "W: rated as well. "-Depending on your Code, you may be restricted to having the pump motor wired using flexible conduit only. (IRC electrical provisions permit twist-lock cords on permanently installed above ground pools only.)" I have never heard of any requirement, even local, that requires a conduit-only connection to a pool pump motor. Of course it may exist somewhere, but in all my years i have never heard of such. |

| Petey is somewhat right. Twist lock receptacles are allowed for any permanently installed pool pump motor installation but are only usually found supplied with non-storable type above ground pools. Twist lock receptacles cannot be used with storable swimming pools. Storable swimming pool cords come with their own factory supplied grounded attachement plugs that are required to have a built in GFCI protection device. ----------- |
