Hmm, I've (rarely) seen outlets in closets...and occassionally found them handy.

I guess I understand no outlets based on fires, etc. I wonder if that's building code here ?

I've intentionally installed outlets in closets when I wanted to have a tv or other electronics out of sight in there, and gotten no complaints from the electrical inspectors (in the U.S.). I don't know Canada code or if there are exceptions, but I would contact the building department, tell them what you want to do, and see if you can just leave it in place.

No such restriction on RECEPTACLES in the US. The only outlet restrictions I am aware of are for lighting clearances in closet.

Could you plug in a lamp with an incandescent bulb? How about an electric iron?

Such actions are beyond the purview of the NEC. Other laws are as varied as the jurisdictions which enact them.

Our condo built in 2007 has an outlet in the master walk in closet. It is great, we have a charging shelf for all of the stuff that needs charging.
