Sloppy J-box hole won't let new fixture seat eight

We bought a new entry ceiling fixture, semi-flush style, When I pulled the old flush fixture, I found the wiring hole in the dry wall was rough cut and egg shaped so the canopy of the new light doesn't sit nice and straight in the ceiling surface. The canopy doesn't cover it. We had a heck of a time finding a fixture we liked so we're reluctant to return it. Is there any sort of ceiling plate we could buy that goes between the drywall and fisture canopy like big washer to give the canopy a straight and solid seating surface? One of those big plaster medallions won't work in our decor.
