Pot Light - Pendent Light

I know nothing about electricity and hired a handyman ($80. an hour - New Jersey rate) to do some odds and ends. We have a pot light over our sink and bought a pendent light to replace it thinking it was a simple job. Apparently this is quite an endeavor - he quoted between $400. and $500. He outlined what it would entail but once he mentioned the price I decided not to bother and will put the pendent back in the box and find a place in the garage to store it as it can't be returned. Would it be worth our while to maybe call in an electrician and get a "second opinion"? PS-we live in a fairly new one story home. Thanks.

There's a good reason it's illegal for handymen to do this sort of work. It shouldn't take any competent person more than an hour to do the wiring. There may be drywall repairs needed as the pendant dome is likely to be smaller than the hole in the ceiling.

Of course, there are things on the market that screw into your pot light socket and allow a pendant to be hung there.
