220v lines to irrigation pump

I'm installing a 220v pump that requires 10ga. wires for the run. Is 10ga. also required for the neutral/ground or would 14ga. be sufficient, as it is already there.

For a circuit wired with #10 the ground must also be #10.

I forgot to mention. A 240v pump will not have or require a neutral.
