I've seen them but never used them. I have installed the motion sensing light switches (works great in the kid's room). They're come down in price. I saw a two-pack for $20 the other day.

Refrigerator manufacturers have used them for decades, so I wouldn't be terribly worried about reliability. Replaceability shouldn't be a problem, either. You might also give consideration to using low voltage lighting in these locations.

We have them in our reach in pantries. My husband installed them during construction of our house. (We did not have very good electricians, so he did not trust them to get them right.) He says they are not the easiest to install.
