Chandelier wiring problem

I just had the ceilings replaced in my 100 year old house, and I'm having difficulty re-hanging the dining room chandelier. The chandelier has two wires. There are three wires in the box, one of which is a pair twisted together. Connecting my test light from the twisted pair to either of the other wires shows current, and there is no current when the test light is connected to the two single wires. Problem is that the test results are the same whether the wall switch is "on" or "off". The switch worked just fine before the ceilings came down two weeks ago and is a modern switch installed a few years ago. Can anyone tell me what's going on and what I should do?
