Brass ring crimped onto ground wire from supply side ???

Installing a new light fixture in a bathroom. My wife took down the previous fixture but did not note how the previous fixture was wired. Pretty obvious to connect the black supply side with the black from the new fixture, same with the white wire. The confusing thing to me on the supply side the ground wire has a brass ring crimped on its end. How does this connect to the ground wire on the new fixture? Do I just wrap the supply ground wire around the ground screw, tighten the screw then the end of the fixture ground wire around the brass ring and place electric tape over that connection? Or could I just cut off the brass ring, cover with a wire nut and twist together? What is the function of the brass ring on the supply side ground wire? Thanks for any replies.

The old fixture probably had machine screw terminal and nut to put the ring onto. If you new fixture does not have this then cut the ring off and use a wire nut to join the grounds.

The crimp is just another way of joining the ground wires instead of a wire nut. As you don't have to tool to redo that, do as Joed said.

You have several options, all of them equally effective. It sounds like you have a free ground wire connected to the other ground wires by the brass crimp, and a ground wire that is already attached to the new fixture. If so, you can just use a small wire nut to join them. If the new fixture has a ground screw so that its ground wire can be detached, you can just hook the ground wire coming from the crimp up to the ground screw on the light fixture and dispose of the fixture ground wire. (It might be a good idea to take 3/4" off the free end of the old wire so you have a new, undamaged piece of wire to hook to the ground terminal.) Or, you can cut off the crimp and join all the ground wires, including the one on the fixture, with one wire nut. There is no need or purpose in taping anything.
