What is this box in my foyer (pics)?

Or how do I found out what it is? I thought this was wiring for a sconce but I posted on another board and they thought maybe for an alarm system? There is currently no other wiring for an alarm system. It's in a strange spot at the end of the foyer. There was a picture hung over it when we look at the house. Thanks for your help!

Alarm system? I don't think so.

That is either 14/2 or 12/ NM cable. Looks like 14/2 to me.
More likely than not this was for a light fixture. Possibly for a smoke detector, but I highly doubt it.

I don't see it being for an alarm system. More likely a wall sconce. It's an old work box, perhaps the previous owner wanted to add something and never got around to finishing the project. Does that switch on the wall control the power to the box?

Nothing to do with alarm, for sure. By the height, not a smoke, too low. My guess is a wall sconce or clock outlet. If it's controlled by a switch, the one in the photo or another somewhere nearby, it's for a wall sconce. If it's hot all the time, a clock outlet.

foyer = entrance hallway.

quite often added on after the house was originally built.

There was probably an outdoor light there before the foyer existed.

pharkus, this box was added after the wall was finished. With the wire coming in from the bottom, it is probably fed from the switch box below.

My guess is it was an outlet box for a lamp or clock. I have seen outlet boxes at that height in houses built in the 1960s. These were for wall clocks or some other device where it was desired to keep the plug out of reach of small children.

Could it be an old emergency switch for a boiler down stairs?

Is the black wire live?
Does the switch control it or something else?
The switch plate appears to be oversized suggesting that it, also, may be an add-on.
