Wire Size from Meter

Posted by nebb (My Page) on

Have 100Amp breaker below meter (new barn installation) need to run 60 foot underground in conduit to 100amp panel in barn. Want to make sure I install the right size wire to handle and I would rather use copper. First recommendation was #2 stranded on all three wires, Second was #3 for mains and #4 for neutral. Which, if either, is correct? Thanks

RE: Wire Size from Meter

Depends on the type of wire (specifically the insulation) but most of the copper you're going to come across (other than UF) is going to be OK at #3 for 100A. You need a ground (which can be #8). What size the neutral is going to be depends on the loads involved. I'd use #3 unless you're guaranteed that you can use otherwise.
