The box needs to be within a quarter of an inch from the finished surface. If that's all you mean by a little recessed, you are ok. You could use extenders, but I do like the adjustable boxes in situations like this.

I use them in bathroom and kitchen remodels. It never fails, after rough and drywall the customer decides to add tile or clapboard siding which leaves the box recessed and requires extenders which I HATE on a new install. Adjustable boxes are OK in my book.

I like them for the same reasons.

We use them on splashes and for receptacles in cabinets (microwaves, dishwasher etc) and we always crank them way out at rough in. We found if we don't crank them out the tile guys don't cut the tile enough and trap our box in, and the cabinet guys cut a sloppy hole that doesn't line up. They think we can just screw the receptacle onto the cabinet back with drywall screws.

Cut the tile enough? Usually the clowns will completely drywall over the box leaving to wonder where the box went to.
