Surround speakers are 5 channels (Front Left, Front Center, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right) plus a sub woofer.

Does that possibly correspond to a possible TV/screen placement in the room?

Can you find where the wires originate? Prehaps where a tuner/receiver for a home theater might be placed.

Speakers make more sense.

A red and green pair are the classic colors for a telephone line.

Do you know anyone with a 'butt set'?

There may be a dial tone present.

Is the wood in the picture the floor or a door? What does the switch do?

Its the floor. My picture should be rotated 90 degrees.

I was at the house today and speakers make even more sense to me now. The two on the back wall are at the same height and maybe 5 feet apart and maybe 6 feet off the floor. The front wall has two at the same height and the one (pictured) near the floor - probably the woofer.

Thanks all...I think this mystery is solved. I still think its weird that each has an on/off switch but the room layout and positions of each makes me believe they were for speakers.

Find the other end.
Speaker wiring typically ends up at a single common location for the source.

They might have been using powered speakers
