We have a basement that was finished when we moved into the house but when they wired the basement lights (cans) they're only controlled from the switch at the TOP of the stairs. That creates a problem and a safety issue too.

Because of finished walls I would like not to run wires to a second switch. I know there are remote switches on the market but I would like some suggestions. Is one better than the others?

Certainly some are better than others. Leviton makes one called an Anywhere switch (model 6696). The "receiver" side replaces your one way switch. The other can be mounted anywhere (you can cut a hole into the wall to mount it flush if you like). It requires no wiring, the remote uses batteries to run the radio link to the "receiver"
