Not sure where this question fits but here goes:

After careless utility workers marked lines in the easement behind my house they left the cover loose and hanging from the phone co's pedistal box.

Without thinking of any consequences, I took it upon myself and removed the cover and reattached it properly and tightened the bolt. For good measure I also tightened the cable tv box next to it. Of course I did not touch any of the connections.

After the fact, I realized I probably shouldnt have touched it regardless. My brother said I committed a felony and my dad said he would have just called the phone co. and reported it. Im kinda freaked out now since some of the neighbors probably saw me removing the cover and then securing it as well.

So do you think what I did was a bad idea and could possibly bite me or my family on the ass?

I need some ammunitition when the subject comes up again at home.
