junction boxes, low profile?

I just recently bought a home built in 1850. I had the electricians in yesterday to replace some lighting. In the kitchen over the countertop and stove was some ugly track lighting. When we removed it and drilled a hole in the ceiling for the junction box for the new lighting the bedroom floor was right there!

A regular sized junction box won't fit so now they are saying I have to have a visible junction box on the wall and run the wires for the lights on the ceiling. HUH? That isn't going to look good.

There is some space between the downstairs ceiling and the upstairs floor but not enough for a traditional junction box. Do they make smaller ones?

Any other ideas?

Susan
