Wine Appreciation Clubs?

I've taken a few "wine tasting" classes and, although enjoyable, they really just seem to be a fun thing to do and not a real learning event.

I'd like to find a club - a group of people - who gather periodically around the topic of wine, so that I can learn a lot about wine specifics while enjoying a social atmosphere.

Yes, I could get books and read up, but I'd like to make this a "thing" with others as opposed to self-oriented.

I live in Massachusetts & work in New Hampshire. Anyone know if any organizations like this exist and how to find them? I've asked around at various liquor or wine specialty stores with no luck. Internet searches turn up "wine clubs", meaning monthly shipments of wine or something like that.

You won't find them that way. If you are looking for an informal club, don't expect someone to take the time to keep a website updated. Better idea is to leave a note at a local wine store - a good wine store. Or you can go to a class, meet some people, and ask some of them if they want to get together. Alternatively, check some wine sites like the Mark Squires board or something similar and put up a post for people in your area who may be interested.

And think about how you want it structured - e.g. do you set a price and have everyone bring a bottle, or do you collect some money for dues and then decide what to drink, etc. Lots of ways to do it.

And where. Do you want to host or have a rotating thing or go to a restaurant? Will there be separate glasses for each wine and if so, who keeps them, buys them, cleans them, etc.

Omigosh, Jodi, if I didn't know you, I'd think you were making this up! (Oh, yeah--you have pictures, too.) LOL Seriously, what a wonderful thing you describe. Long-term friendships, getting together on a regular basis, sharing fabulous food, reading, discussing.....and wine! Well, it's going to be the soup (in small mugs; I don't have any soup mugs). Also hot rolls, the dried apricot/mascarpone/walnut appetizer, and blackberry cobbler from the bakery for dessert. Maybe ice cream with the cobbler, or else just leftover cream from my soup recipe. Makes for an awful lot of cream in this menu, but I guess it will be okay. I'll put out green onion tops to sprinkle on the soup. There is no store even 35 miles away that carries chives. I posted a question about the soup recipe because although I've made it many times it's never seemed to me like the amount of squash called for is right. Thanks so much to all of you for your help.

+1 to K&L Wines. I love going to their shop in SF and getting commendations from their staff. It's definitely a place where you'll find stuff not at Costco or Total Wines. I heartily encourage to be open to blends -- most of France's great red wines are blends rather than single varietals. Some wine lovers I know prefer to belong to specific winery clubs --- which can get you access to rare and limited release production. It's relatively common around here. I just had a limited release Malbec from a wine club that was excellent (but not available to the public). (Granted, yesterday at Costco I picked up a demi-bouteille of Chateau Miraval Rose at a bargain price -- yes, that's the Jolie-Pitt winery that produces a highly rated Rose. Seek out some Provencal rose)

Rosefolly ......well the craziness would sure fit for my group though we hardly tipple. Our senses of humor seem to sync so that when we get on a roll we really have some great laughs. During one nasty snowstorm one of the girls was getting ready to drive up for our get together and her husband asked : " What do you all DO at these that you'd risk life and limb to get there !!?" LOL. They each hate to miss our "every other week" afternoons during the winter season. And our motto is : " If you're not here we'll talk about you ! " ( all in good fun :0))
