 o
growing larger grapes

Hello Everyone!
I purchased some 3 year old vines last year, and I am now in the process of training them on a trellis. Last year, one of the vines fruited, however this year, it did not. Should I be heavily fertilizing with a compost in the spring? What can I do to improve the size of the grapes, I own mega-gro, and I am trying that. What do you recommend?

thanks for the help,
Justin in zone 4

RE: growing larger grapes

At the very least get a test kit for soil pH. Soil pH for most grapes should be around 6.4 to 6.6. Vinifera types tolarate more lime, but you're in zone 4 so probably back east.
Make sure the vine gets full or nearly full sun.
Too much fertilizers especially nitrogen will give you a lot of leaves and less fruit.
kelp meal is a good side dressing for trace minerals.
Keep the weeds and grass a good 3 feet from the trunk.
