For me, the taste of Red Zin is much drier and more tannic than a white Zin. The red tastes somewhere between a heavy Pinot Noir and a Merlot but with more grape taste. From what I remember, the reds run around 14% - 15% alcohol when fermented out whereas the whites are usually less.

Both are made from the same red Zin grapes. The color change comes from the skins being left in contact with the juice for a longer time with the deep reds. The red Zin is aged for a long time and picks up flavors from the barrels and through the ageing process.

IMHO, a red zin should not be overly tannic. In fact, I think they make a great foil for being a red and not so dry & tannic that they make you pucker, like so many dry reds do. A good zin should not - that's why they're my favorite!

My absolute most favorite zinfandel is the Edizione Pennino Zinfandel from Rubicon Estates (formerly known as Niebaum-Coppola. It's wonderful... :-)

There is nothing about a red Zin that resembles a white Zin for me, other than the name. White Zin is known as "beginner wine" behind doors in the wine industry. It is usually very sweet and not complex making it easy to sip for those who are not accustomed to wine. Many people decide to branch out and explore other varietals after tiring of white Zin.

Curious, what do these kits consist of? Sounds interesting.

barnmom, I bought the white zin kit,The red did not sound good to me.I am not a DRY drinker, sweeter but no too, is best for my taste, therefore white zin.. The kit contains all you need except the vessels. Here is a link of the instructions page for making the wine with what is supplied with the kit.

Most wine equiptment retailers have these for sale.

If link does not work, try....www.winexpert.com

My wine has just finished.. and is now ready to bottle.
