any additive/chemical-free wines?

I did an internet search to see if any country forbade the use of chemicals in its wine, couldn't find any. Instead, I found Australia allows the use of 50 chemicals in wine, and that Germany's since-1567 purity law that forbids any but 4 ingredients to make beer does not cover wine, and that German wine is without protection from the use of chemicals to make it. Since my allergies are incited by so many wines, that may be because of chemicals or because some strains of yeast cause allergies more than others, I need to find an inexpensive wine I can drink without an allergic problem. The only US wine I've tried that is never a problem is Korbel California Champage "Natural"/Extremely Dry [not to be confused with either Korbel's Brut or Very Dry which are quite allergic], but I don't always want a whole, expensive bottle of champagne. Is there any wine which those of you with allergies have found safe to drink? Or is there any origin country of wine supposed to be free of chemical additives? Thanks

You might want to see a doctor and have an allergy test and see what you are allergic too.

One possibility would be an organic winery. Organic wine uses only natural ingredients so that would fit your criteria of no chemicals.

I've not tried them, but Four Chimneys here on Seneca Lake is supposed to be good. They do mail order, and are the first organic winery in North America.

I don't want to fight the lawn for eight years, I have that much time at least and am in no real rush otherwise. As for turning it over in a perfect state, that's more a factor of selling a home than anything else. I want to please any prospective buyers when the time comes to sell this home. I'm happy with green stuff out front, but in this day and age most people want something more than a random assortment of grasses. I can play along with that thought process as long as I can do so safely with regards to my own interest. I have a fairly large tree that shades most of the yard, so direct sun is out of the question. Would this pretty much kill the clear plastic method? Also do yo think weeding regularly will improve the final outcome. My understanding is that it helps the soil. Maurice Pudlo

I am sorry, but my point is this flammability standard has been in effect for 15 years or more, even if not required on the federal level. It has been required by many states. Manufacturers of the fabrics and the materials that go into making a sofa or mattress has been using these chemicals to meet the state requirements; particular the California standards. Every individual furniture manufacturer has been meeting these standards because it is almost impossible for them to buy any materials that has not been treated to meet the flammability standards. Even a spring cushion or mattress has some padding and materials that covers the springs, all of which has been treated with chemicals to meet the standard. The cotton industry is one of the first to start using chemicals to meet the standards. Any place you can go purchase a bed or upholstered furniture will tell you everything they sell meets the flammability standards. European standards are even tougher than the North American standards. Their are many ways you can treat fabrics, materials and fillings to meet the standards, and some chemicals are safer than others but most have never really been fully tested for long term safety. What the federal law does here is to keep each state from having their own standards and so suppliers of the industry dont have to worry about but just one standard for everything they sell. I hope even if only a few readers of this form take the time and do the research on whats really going on here and then write or call the CPSC or to their congress person and let them know of their concerns. One way to give consumers a choice is just require manufacturers to put on the law label one of 2 statements, either this product meets the flammability standards or it does not. This will enable suppliers to start offering materials to manufacturers without these potential very harmful chemicals. Colin, Here goes: Campden tablets = sodium or potassium metabisulfite and are used for killing off wild yeasts in raw grape juice (must). Alternately, you could heat the must to pasteurization temperatures or start with concentrates / pasteurized juice. You can also use yeasts with a very high competitive factor (like the Lalvin EC-1118 or K1-V1116) and hope that they'll overrun any wild yeasts but you're taking your chances there. Yeast Nutrients = anything from specially prepared dead yeast to combinations of diammonium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate and magnesium sulfate. This is used to make sure the yeast has enough to eat, especially nitrogen. If you're doing grape or fruit based wines, it's not needed though it might speed the fermentation a little. If you're doing things like mead, you can substitute a handful of raisins. Acid blend = a blend of citric, malic and tartaric acids that usually comes in crystalline form. It's used to balance the acid in a wine as determined by pH (usually tested by little strips of paper that turn color or a rather exepnsive electronic tester). The acidity affects the taste so that low acid levels taste flat / flabby and high acid tastes sharp. If your pH is too high, you can add the juice of a lemon to the fermentation (or later when you first taste the wine) and be just fine. If you've got a good balance of grapes, the fermentation should be fine without it. Good luck on your wine and don't worry too much about the additives ... people have been making good wines without chemical additives for a long time.

I agree with the Vap and Mad's post and know they have more expertise than I. My experience is growing roses in an arid environment, with no fungal disease issues, to now one where it exists. I have a recommended list for Texas, but even here where I live has different conditions than a city 20 miles away. I would almost have to ask rose growers in my community for rose recommendations. I work in the city of Austin and have yet to experience the humidity levels at home that I do there. There are other differences that elevation etc. make. What I decided to do was look to gardeners in my state (Coastal Plains Region only), then Oklahoma and other southern gardeners, and then all roses reported to be disease resistant. I created three lists ( a primary, secondary and tertiary). My first batch of roses, the ones purchased last year, came from the Texas AG and local source recommendations... (primary list). My secondary list is comprised of suggestions from people who in my mind fight a stronger disease pressure than here where I am. My tertiary list is comprised of roses that are just reported to be disease resistant. I tend to grow a lot of roses in number and variety. Using only those suggested for my area will not yield the rose garden I want. With that communicated, I purchase a lot of bands that come at a lesser cost, am up for the trial and error, hopefully with some good surprises, and will use something like neem oil, oiled cups etc. to keep my garden as spray-free as possible. YMMV. What I am doing is the best plan that I could come up with for my conditions, but it definitely has a good degree of trial and error.

I seem to do well with New Zealand wines and Australian...
Don't know what it is with me that causes the closed ears and the pounding hear....but have not found it to be present in any Aussie or New Z wines I have tried....

Perhaps you might think of making your own wine...then you can control the additives/chemicals, especially the sulfites. My husband makes wines for this reason. L.

There are MANY wine cultures that wine makers use. If you find a wine you can successfully drink, you should stay with it.

Only 5% of the wines in the U.S are boutique...naturally made, hand picked, hand sorted, without additives. Besides loving the way small batch wines taste, you really appreciate the quality the next day, when you dont have a headache :):) The other 95% are mass produced or formula wines.

Many people are allergic to the sulphite used in most wines. Are you allergic to sulpha drugs? same stuff. Sulpha allergies are fairly common, actually. A rash is the usual reaction.

You can buy "organic" wines, here in Canada, but they are very expensive.
