Trellis direction

| I have moderately steep hillside that faces south. From top to bottom the hill is about 40 feet. From east to west is about 150 feet. I want to plant grapes on it next year. Should I run the trellis sideways on the hill (east/west) or up and down the hill (north/south)? |

| I think it will depend on a few factors such as if there is consistent sun across the hillside, if you have inconsistent drainage across the hill, what type of trellising system you plan on using, etc. All things being equal, I'd say to run them across the hill for ease of maintenance / mowing between the rows, to minimize any chance that you have a microclime that will cause the ones on the bottom to ripen at a different time than the ones up top and to provide a consistent level of wind exposure to the vines. Just to get a couple of more opinions, I'd also suggest cross-posting over on the Fruits forum since it's pretty active and there are a bunch of grape growers. |
