Grape varieties- and wine…

Posted by weird20grapevines (My Page) on

Hey,
I'm interested in hearing about everyone’s grape wine made from different varietals … (Please list the varietal... and a description of the wine...

The reason I post this is because my parents and I have started an organic vineyard. The varieties that we planted are Traminette, Leon Millot, Cayuga White, Norton, Frontenac, Marechal Foch, and a little Chardonel (it’s fussy thats why). The varieties are all between 1-4 years old because they were hit hard by the Missouri late freeze and a very harsh summer but they are all still alive and well. I will also (if I have my way) put in Frontenac Gris, Brianna, NY81.0315.17 / 3309 (Cayuga White x Riesling), and Marquette…

Does anyone have any comments or experience with any of these varieties of grapes or wine?!? ...even if you just like to drink them :)... Just looking ahead to when I get to make some… because we just might have a little crop this year.

I haven't grown any of the grapes but I've had red wines from Frontenac and Marechal Foch. The Frontenac had a good body but a pretty sharp, acidic taste. The Marechal Foch was a very deep red, reminding me more of a barbera but without the fullness of body and it was a little thin at the end. I think that some really good port could be made from the Marechal since it came across so heavy but taste is so subjective. Unfortunately, I've looked through my notes and can't find the name of the Frontenac I tried - the Foch was from Winehaven and I think it was a 2004. Hope it helps.

Thanks soooo much!!!!
This really gives me a great place to start looking at similar wines/port!!!
Also if you would like you could post any suggestions on zone ~5 gapes suggestions for wine?
I'm really open to anything i just has to be grown organic! Thanks again for the suggestion/comment!

Both these wines were not blended right?
Did you particularly like for them more then others?
sorry if I ask stupid questions...

As I said, I don't grow any of the grapes up here - primarily due to lack of sufficient sun on my property - but what the local organinc vineyards that I've visited are growing are primarily Cabernet Franc, Seyval and Riesling with a couple of plantings of Chardonnay. Some of them up here also grow fruits such as raspberries and blackberries to make specialty wines (mostly sweet wines) that seem to draw people to on-site tastings from a novelty aspect.

Actually, both of the wines that I had were pure / almost pure varietals and I think that they could definitely have benefited from some blending and possibly a little more time in oak - I'd say I liked them less than my normal vin ordinaire but they weren't so bad that they got used solely for marinades. My tasting preferences run towards less oaked merlot / cabernets in the reds and sauvignon blancs in white but it's always good to expand the palate and try both different varieties and growing locations since you can find some real gems out there if you're willing to taste some cooking wine too.
