Not too dry - Not too sweet

Looking for a nice red wine to enjoy a glass every night. In your opinion, do you know of a red wine that's not too sweet and not too dry? I've been drinking sherry but find I tire of the sweetness and would like to find something a mite drier. Price is not much of an option although we all like to save money. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Do you have a real good liquor store near you? A knowledgeable store clerk will have lots of choices for you. Costco stores have excellent wine selections, Trader Joe's, too. I'd say that you can start with Cabernets and Pinot Noirs. See if those are too dry for you. If yo;ve been drinking sherry, most anything will taste way dry. But you're only buying one bottle at a time to start!

Dave -- Thank you for your suggestions! I will definitely try to prop the dome a little and keep a fan going nearby. Oilpainter -- I acknowledge that damping-off may have played a role in killing the seedlings, but I did notice that they were fine when the soil was moist ... and in the morning, when the cell had tried out too much on top, they had fallen over (and not from the stem base -- it was more like an overall drooping). I've also heard a bit about this cinnamon trick -- I'll have to give it a try! Sleepy33 -- Thanks also for your advice. I may need to pull the lights away from the not-yet-germinated seeds, especially the poor surface-sown ones! Keriann -- You were actually right! I have both seedlings and not-yet-germinated seeds going right now. Swamp milkweed, purple prairie clover, sweet indian plantain, scabiosa, some violets, dill, and prairie coreopsis have sprouted. Milkweed is doing the best right now, just about to show first set of true leaves! I'm most worried about the violets, which are sprouting slowly and sporadically. They're so small, I'm afraid of them being consumed by mold. Same with snapdragon and joe pye weed seeds, which are extremely tiny and surface-sown. As for fungus: So far I've mostly seen a white haze of mold on my soil. Very subtle-looking. But strangely, I've also noticed many chunks of perlite exhibiting a coating of yellowish to orange-ish mold! What in the world!? I took tweezers and removed as much of the perlite from the soil surface as possible. I've also just started trying to overnight my seedling/seeded flats in my bedroom with a fan on to help keep the mold down. And sadly, I have no other place to set up my lights. :(

I recently got the newest addition of The World Of Hoyas by Dale Kloppenburgh and in it he mentions that the Philippine Hoya species like to be watered frequently and that they should not be allowed to dry out like many other Hoya species. Having said this it is very important to have a fast draining potting mix to allow air to reach the roots. I grow my Hoya DS-70 in a short 5" clay pot and I water it pretty much every day. My plant does very well with this treatment because the fast draining potting mix and clay pot allow lots of air in the root zone. I have never grown this Hoya in a plastic or glazed pot but I know many others have so hopefully they can help. Are your plants newly potted or have they been together in the pot for some time? If you have recently potted the cuttings together you might need to water less until the roots colonize the potting media a little more. Mike

If the browning is steadily spreading around the plant, it's a fungal disease and the plant may be bare by August. However, it might restart from a retarded state next season (sans the disease). I think all of mine became diseased after 15" of rain in June last year, but this year there's no browning!

It's kinda' tough to go through bottle after bottle without finding something palatable. As they have a huge selection, I checked with Wegman's wine specialist who sold me a white and a red of California Menage a Trois, both of which I gave away after tasting.

Go back to Wegman's and tell the clerk exactly what you thought about those wines recommended the last time. That's the only way he can help you.

Check out local restaurants that have wines by the glass and try those, instead of buying a bottle.

It's almost impossible for anyone to know what someone else would like!

I would decide what sweetness you like first. 0 is very dry, 1 is sweeter, 2 is sweeter than 1, etc... Once you know that, then go through and pick out a few different bottles to take home and try until you find one that you like. Everyone's taste is different so even a recommended wine might not be exactly what you are looking for. There are a lot of domestic Calif wines that are good and will be cheaper than imported. Personally, I like the German Rhine wines best, better than Italian and I prefer white for drinking without food, but I have not found a red that I truly couldn't drink either.

Francis Ford Coppola (yes, the award-winning director) has two wineries in California. The aptly named Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville (Sonoma Valley) produces an "everyday table wine" named Rosso -- which is Italian for red. The retail price is $12 per bottle, but you can almost always find it on sale for about $7. You can find it in the grocery store wine section. It is very good, and great for when you just want to enjoy a glass of wine by itself, or to drink when you are having burgers, spaghetti, or pizza.
