Axel trim

Hello,
I had a window rep come yesterday to have a look at some windows I need replaced . We are wanting Marvin Ultimates. This is a second company I've had come as I wanted to at least get two prices. This person kept saying they could not fit my windows with a full replacement and would have to do a window and do the trim in azek. I've not heard of doing it this way before and am questioning this. The other company rep didn't mention anything like this and seemed to not question four of the window sizes. He did have a problem with one, a semi circle over a double hung, but said they could work that out. Is the azek something that Marvin does on odd sized windows for trim ?
Thank you,
Salbwil

Some pictures of your current window and what they are proposing would help.

What is the outside cladding of the home?

The outside cladding is cedar (not painted ) clapboards two thirds of,the way up the walls and natural cedar shingles to the peak. House is two story. I guess I have not heard of doing azek as trim on clad windows.....whole point of doing colored clad is upkeep and lack of having to paint every five years...yes ? The trim is a Marvin color, sage.

azek is a remarkable/ low maintenence product. its a cellular pvc that comes in white but can be painted. no worries with rot or water absorbtion.
great product but can be pricey .

Azek would be something recommended by the installer, not a direct "procedure" from Marvin.... I am having a difficult time understanding how, where, and why they are proposing to use it though. Typically it is used to replace your existing wood trim in lieu of aluminum capped wood-- it is a nice product that has a high-end look. If you want a color other than white and don't want to worry about painting, perhaps aluminum is the way to go.

I had asked for and want the Ultimate full replacement window with brickmoldcasing outside trim , which would be the closest in looks to what I have now. The first estimate I received was changed twice and then they told me they could not do the install. The second estimate stated they would use azek trim. I don't understand why Marvin cannot give me an estimate with the brickmoldcasing / aluminum trim. Help ?
    Thank you,

Again, Marvin is not quoting you on the windows and install it is a dealer for Marvin. Why they will not quote you on what you want I cannot say but Marvin has clad exterior casing and brickmold so maybe you need to find another dealer.

    Hi Millworkman,
I have been to the only dealers/installers in my area . I will write/ email Marvin and explain the above to them and see what reply I receive. The second dealer did say that the windows would be easier to fit with the azek trim as it could be cut to fit, but why aren't the dealers matching the windows to my opening measurements ? Marvin claims on their website that they can match any opening .

I have no idea as all Marvin products while listed as standard sizes are "made to order", meaning and size you need down to the 1/8" if memory serves me right. As far as pricing goes I have been out of the residential wood window business for a few years so I cannot tell you for certain if there is an extra charge for custom sizes. As far as contacting Marvin the only thing they will be able to do realistically is point you to a dealer. If you cannot get the windows you want with the accessories you need maybe from the local Marvin dealer maybe look at Kolbe & Kolbe as they are a very close second to Marvin in my opinion and they have all the same accessories.

MW is right. Marvin can give you the window with the clad brick mould that you are asking for in any size you need (assuming within their recommended minimums and maximums). The stumbling block is the Azek siding. I might expand the request for an estimate beyond a window replacement specialist to also include a general contractor. I am saying this because "most" window specialists have a C license which is a glazing specialty while the GC has a B license which covers all areas. My humble opinion without seeing any pictures and with limited information.

I do not have azek siding. The estimator recommended azek trim in place of clad brickmoldcasing and I am wondering why since I asked for the entire window to be the clad ultimate full replacement. I was , what I thought , very clear in our requests for the estimate. As I have stated, one company said they could not do the install and the second company said they would do the install ( and not too bad a price ) but wanted to do azek trim on the windows. The windows were standard Pella sizes when we built the house in 1979, so I am guessing sizes can't be that far off. This is a large expense so we are trying to be careful with the planning to avoid errors down the road.
    Once again,
    Thank you, salbwil

Ok. I reread the first post... Are you wanting the factory added exterior trim from Marvin? ... and they are saying that they cannot do it on the 1/2 round? That does seem to ring a bell for me. I don't recall the exact options, but I know that there is some limited availability of options like that when you get into special shapes. I know for sure that there is in the Integrity line because the fg can only be pultruded in straight lineals. If that is the case, just get the extruded brickmold for the other windows and have the contractor bend the half round from matching coil stock. I believe that Marvin actually offers the coil stock with matching kynar finish.

They are saying they want to do the azek trim on ALL windows, not just the half round and I just don't get it . I think most of you here are not getting it either as one would expect . One would think that the dealers would be anxious to sell us more , not less, hence the clad brickmold not the azek.

Marvin will bend there clad brickmold from what I recall, no reason at all your "window guy" cannot or should not be able to do what you want except for his reasons (ignorance or just not comfortable using clad casing). As I stated prior and eastbay commented on as well, get away from your "window guy" and look for a quality GC or a better window guy. His inability to give you a price on what you want and lack of knowledge of the products available should send up a big red flag.
