New Home Build - Windows ?

mjp67

My wife and I are building a new home here in southern Wisconsin.
The builder specs out Weathershield Vision 3000 vinyl windows. When I looked at them briefly in the model (model now closed), was not overly impressed. In doing the due diligence, seems like they do no get the reviews terms of general items and customer service.

Now that being said, looking for "advice" on Okna 800 series vs Vision 3000's for vinyl windows. We are also looking at alum clad wood between Kolbe Ultra, Eagle and Marvin.

I appreciate any and all advice and experiences. Thanks.

Okna 800 is going to be the most air tight and energy efficient out of that list.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a company in your area that is an okna dealer. The company is called Home Sealed. I would contact them and ask to see the window.

If you can get the guys at HomeSealed to supply your builder with Okna 800's, that is a huge win.

Getting that good a window in a new construction application will make for a fantastically efficient window schedule.

If it were me, I would opt for the triple pane-argon glass package.

Be sure to ask HomeSealed about air sealing and insulation prior to the builder closing up the shell.

The aluminum clad products you mention are considered to be the cream of the crop in wood/clad commercially available windows (even though I am not a fan of Eagle personally) but as mentioned of above, performance wise Okna is head and shoulders above.

I'm not the OP, but in reading this thread I see the responses talked about performance-wise. What about appearance-wise? How do the Okna 800s look? Curb appeal is important especially if you are going to the trouble of building a new home.

Not much different look from the exterior, particularly if you get full screens and or a color other than white.
The interior is where there is a difference between vinyl and wood.

There's no comparison between vinyl and wood. If you're building a new home, you owe it to yourself to invest in a good wood/clad window. Marvin is at the upper end of the spectrum, while Kolbe and Eagle are OK.

Not the biggest vinyl fan either EF, but curios what you mean by "There's no comparison between vinyl and wood"?

You are right, no comparison. High End Vinyl Windows will have MUCH better performance numbers than a wood window. Compare some of the numbers of an okna, soft lite, or kensington to a marvin and you will clearly see, marvin, andersen, and pella lose on every imaginable metric.
Ufactor, air infiltration, structural ratings ( high end vinyl wins 100% ). Also, no maintenance and high end vinyl lasts longer as welll as being more affordable.
Wood has a place in a very old home that has a lot of wood trim.

I'll be careful about what I say since the OP appears to be near me, however I just want to add that there is no one magic window material that is BEST. If there was, this would be a very simple discussion. Each material has pros and cons, and to imply that this is not the case is generally self serving or ignorant.
There is quite a bit that goes into this conversation, but very generally speaking, a high end vinyl window will offer performance (energy efficiency) that most wood windows can't match, while a wood window will offer a look and feel that can't be matched by vinyl. Which is the "right" choice will depend entirely on the circumstances of the individual project (goals for look and performance, maintenance, budget, personal preference, location and value of home, etc).

    Millworkman...

"Not the biggest vinyl fan either EF, but curios what you mean by "There's no comparison between vinyl and wood"?"

    I think he meant price.

+1 to HomeSealed's comments. You have to get the right product for your home but to make such broad based comments about vinyl with no defined variables or criteria is about like saying that BMW is the best car when the person asked for a truck.

I appreciate all the advice and thoughts.

With the cost of the project, while I prefer the alum/wood clad type windows, I may have to go the high end vinyl route. Other items will take some of the $$ before the windows.

Unfortunately, it becomes a balancing act.

I will update the post when the decision is made.

    Homesealed said it well.

The only thing I'd add is that it's worth it spending more on clad/wood vs going with a lower grade and trying to get it closer to the high end vinyl price. Wood/clad doesn't not mean high quality. If brands like Kolbe, Marvin, Eagle, Loewen are in your budget, good. If they're not, go with those vinyl choices like Okna etc. You need to balance out budget vs look vs energy performance. Which ever is your priority.
