Shutters? a Porch? Colors? Farm house help!?

In the 70's they replaced the 85 double hung windows on the front with casement window. Now, it's time to remodel the outside.

I'm thinking a wrap around porch with roof will take up some of the ugly space between first and second floor windows.

* Can I do shutters? would that look stupid since they wouldn't actually cover the windows?

* What color scheme would work with white trimmed windows?

* I'm planning on putting a stone entrance gate at the bottom of the driveway, so it WILL look nice someday, but I'm at a loss for color schemes, etc.

I would definitely not do shutters because in my opinion, shutters that aren't (at least feasibly) functional look tacked-on. Also, shutters will only make your windows look wider and more horizontal.

I think a full-width/wraparound front porch would be fantastic! How old is the house? Is it possible it had a front porch at some point?
