OK, it seems they are comparable in efficiency if my research is correct. Other than asthetics why would I buy wood? I would appreciate any additional insight.

Primarily a matter of personal choice.

I think my brain is going to start hemorraging if I don't stop thinking about windows. I have one wall with about 22 feet of windows. I don't want to make a mistake. My last house had more glass and it had vinyl and I had no problems. However, then I didn't have the same access to the internet that I have now, and I am beginning to second guess my choices.

I am in the same boat. I am blue in the face from trying to decide on windows. However I can say we are getting wood clad windows for the beauty on the inside and the durability on the outside. Vinyl windows are just as energy efficient and half the price of wood windows. But this is my last house, and I don't want plastic windows in it. Windows are one of the few areas in an otherwise moderately appointed home where a big difference can be made in the appearance and look of quality.

One major consideration is maintenance. Vinyl windows, and clad windows for that matter, don't require a lot of exterior maintenance. All wood windows will need to be painted, and repainted every few years. All wood windows give you lots of flexibility, now and in the future, if you decide to change color schemes. Vinyl and clad windows, while paintable, will require more work to change colors. Warranties are typically a lot longer with clad, or vinyl windows. Read them carefully. |

I believe I am going with the vinyl. We have so many windows and in the end I would rather have lots of vinyl than a smaller amount of wood. We have wood floors, custom wood cabinets and wood/mission style furniture. I am doing sheetrock return and white painted trim so I think I won't miss the wood. At least that is what I think today.

Well, a new twist- I have thrown fiberglass into the mix. The price is very close. The fiberglass will have a grill pattern I like and the wood clad will need to be finished in the inside which will be additional cost. SO, if price were the same is wood the automatic better choice?
