Plantation shutters cutting out more light

Hello,
Recently I had my bedroom blinds replaced by 3.5" plantation shutters but found to my dismay that they cut out more light than expected and one has to open them completely to get the same light as blinds? Would 2.5" plantation shutters fare any better? What size of plantation shutters would let in more light? I have heard some discussions where I have heard that a 4.5" shutter would allow more light that 2.5"? Any other suggestions other than keeping them open completely?
