Skylights that open, issues?

Posted by myrtle_59 (My Page) on

I am remodeling a small bath. We are adding a skylight. The contractor thinks it will make the room hot and i should consider one that opens. I have many skylights in the house already. None open, none leak, no rooms are hot. However, none are in such a small room. I live in the pittsburgh area which tends to be overcast.

Does anyone have velux skylights that open? Do you recommend them? How about the shades and shutters that are made for them? Any experience with them?

Thoughts?

Just use a skylight with low Solar Gain LoE glass.

Velux makes such a good unit; no leaks if installed properly.

Another thought for you might be condensation. In a bathroom, in the winter the glass will be cold and might get wet enough to actually drip, and make you THINK it's leaking, when it's just plain old condensation, venting unit or not.
