With Stucco...start looking at your installation options. That is going to be the more expensive part.

In terms of window, I would look at thermally broken aluminum or fiberglass.

The first thing she should do is check with her electricity provider to see what types of energy saving rebates/incentives they might offer. There also might be state/federal tax credits available . If she wants to save electricity windows are low on the list of energy saving improvements. That said, it looks like they at least offer 0% financing on new windows. They might have a limit on how much you can spend on each window. Expensive windows are a poor investment when trying to save energy.

Do sash kits from Kolbe or Marvin for the double hungs. It will continue to look historic without getting into the stucco. With the steel casements you'll have to do full replacement. But should be easier considering those usually have a very small installation fin behind the stucco or non at all. Consult a local window dealer or contractor.

Are there sash kits or the equivalent for casement windows because that is what the wood windows are.

If you are going to be cutting back the stucco to properly remove the steel windows, I think it would probably look better if you did all the windows the same and at the same time.

No sash kits for casements. Sorry I assumed they were double hungs. Looks like you'll have to do full replacement. There are some "pocket" type windows that fit into existing wood frames, but for your application I dont think it would look right.

Thanks all. The estimate is $23,000 for fiberglass casement windows. I think she can live with leaky windows and high summer utility bills. Maybe well get an energy audit and see about more insulation and weatherstripping and summer vacations elsewhere.

Check the insulation first and you can put a film on the window to control solar heat.

Are these worth saving? I love the blue and with replacements I could never get it again I don't think. They have some gap problems as you can see. Would weatherstripping help?

You could probably have a carpenter or contractor come in and add weatherstrip on it.

QUICK energy saver if you have a flat surround on the windows.

Use cheap curtain rods, the compression kind, and make a quick "cafe curtain" of sunshade fabric. The one shown has been up for 1.5 summers in NM and still doing well. I just stapled the fabric to make a "hem" for the rods to go through.

They - thanks to physics - do NOT blow off in a high wind.

If you want, put up some Low-e equip interior storms.

If you want to weatherstrip, use bronze.
