We are going to re-side the back of our 1950s tract house with steel siding to match other parts of the house. One of the rooms is the northeast corner bedroom, which faces a lake on the east. We've bought a north-facing replacement window with egress compliance which faces a nuthin' view and admits some light. Currently we have a second, useless little window facing the lake which is usually covered by the adjacent closet's open door (southeast corner of the bedroom). You can't stand in front of the east window to look outside without shutting the closet door and you can't look up and down the lake very well no matter how you stand. The room is 10 feet across on the lake dimension and 14 feet across on the north dimension. We can barely fit a double bed into the room, positioning it to the right of the north-facing window and extending well into the 10 foot dimension while still allowing access to the closet. There is sufficient room to walk around the bed to make it up but you can't do much more than that.

We would like to install a replacement for the east-facing stupid window unit, centering it on the wall and giving sufficient view of the lake plus increasing the sunlight and air passage and perhaps providing a little more living room, which brings us to consider some kind of bumped-out window unit.

Plan A: Is there a simple way to extend the floor out toward the lake about 2 feet without messing with the foundation? If we could put a chair into a bumpout, that would be fabulous, because it would give houseguests a place to stand comfortably next to the bed plus a place to sit and/or to plunk clothing and suitcase and etc. in the bumpout. We could make up a 3-sided window enclosure around the bumpout with the side windows openable.

Plan B: Put a readymade bay window unit out there with a window seat that could hold the suitcases and/or someone who doesn't want to be in the bed while reading or hiding out from the family.

Would love to see photos or hear any commentary about this project. Until we understand our options, this is just talk. By October, I have to have a plan because we're re-siding and reroofing. After that, this will be a lot harder to do.
