window only opens 11.5 inches

I have thermal guard (yuck) windows that have these tabs (?) in the top of the window track that do not allow the window to open more than 11.5 inches. If I could take them out, I could open the window another 4 inches to put in an air conditioner. Does anyone know if these tabs are removable? They look like they should be, but I don't want to mess them up if they are not. TIA, Anggi

You might be able to cut them back a bit but they are usually aimed at the travel path of the window not hitting the balance system and creating an interference issue.

You should be able to cut them back. The main purpose is to provide a stop that prevents the lock from slamming into the top lift rail. However many manufacturers make them an inch or more longer than they need to be, so cutting them and leaving them just long enough to protect the lift rail should be fine.
