Picking a competent installer?

I plan on replacing old double-hung windows and sliding doors with same sized new Marvins or Andersen 400s. The house has wood clapboard siding. What do I need to know to figure out which contractor would do the best installation? I've gotten burned by roofers and tilers that came recommended so I prefer to know what constitutes a quality job to help weed the clowns from the craftsmen. Are manufacturer's installation instructions complete in their detail from start to finish? Would a contractor experienced with Andersen products have any problems installing Marvins?

You need to first determine how would like to have the windows installed.

Given that the home has wood clapboard siding, I don't foresee you wanting to undertake a siding replacement.

That rules out a new construction installation.

Insert windows can be the most straightforward or most complicated process depending on the competency of the contractor. A competent contractor should have no problem regardless of the window used.

Go look at work examples. The skill is shown in the details.
