How to screen old windows

I have an 1890's cottage, used in the summer only. The windows are a hodge podge of sizes, and none have a groove or channel for a screen on the outside. The aluminum frame screens in place are held with the type of clips that are pushed into a slot on the window frame, or have a little friction clip at the top and finish nails set in the outside to hold them in place. Almost all are warped and/or bent, and the push clips either missing or bent so they don't work. So I want to replace the entire screens, but I would like a more effective and durable retention system. Any suggestions?
