Replacing transoms?

I have begun the process of getting quotes for replacing my builder grade windows. The main floor windows all have transoms with double hung.

One dealer suggested getting rid of the transoms and doing taller double hung windows as an option for cost savings.

Is this normal practice? I am not tied to the transom look either way, but I don't want to cheapen the asthetics either just to save a few bucks.

A few pics for reference.

Its not uncommon but you will need to figure on a full tear out application, new trim, etc.

You will also need to check with your HOA to see if that is permissible.

You can get the same 'look' with grill. We did this to save money and get a transom look. This pic is a cottage grill on a casement.

By the time you do the additional trim work required, I doubt it will be cheaper. Faking the look will take away from the classic beauty of the transoms IMO.
