Why not just go with something like Fiberglass. No cladding and the look of wood without the warranty concerns.

Why would you waste your money on " cheap wood windows"?
They would obviously be cheaply made and cause you to then replace them again in a few years. That doesnt sound cheap to me. As the other poster mentioned, maybe look at fiberglass.
Also, why would you want an all wood exterior? Unless you are extremely vigilant, you will experience moisture and rot issues.

+2 on the above opinions, cheap "all wood windows" are only cheap the first time you purchase them for a reason!

I agree as well. You seem to have a discerning eye for look and quality, yet you are asking for cheap windows. Those two don't normally go hand in hand.
I like Windows on Washington's suggestion of fiberglass. Marvin will do a wood exterior if that is the route that you end up going, but I would still suggest the clad or fiberglass.

i figured that the "cheaper wood windows" - if that even exists would still be of good quality just that maybe the grilles wouldn't be as prominent. I don't know. Y'all are right.

I will check out the fiberglass. I haven't seen those. We are still working with the architect on our plans so I haven't been to a showroom yet. I just know that I don't like the Jeldwin vinyl that I'm seeing in the neighborhood.

I never grow tired of great looking windows/install/homes. You should send those to Marvin, the last one looks like it could be right out of a brochure :)

it bother's me to see some of these million dollar homes with cheap looking windows. ahhhhh!

mine won't be a million dollars - much smaller house, but i don't want the cheap plastic looking windows that i'm seeing. i just looked at the pella impervia online. they are fiberglass, but i find they look plastic too.

all of these windows look great on the inside of the home, even the jeldwens, but they look flimsy on the exterior. the grilles aren't beefy enough

milgard's look good online, but they don't carry them here.

i'm going to check out andersen 400, pella architect, and marvin integrity, and jeldwen premium in showrooms to see what looks best.

Don't go cheap on the window, you will just have problems down the road.

If you want a cheap wood window you get what you pay for. You say you don't like the look of a clad window but Kolbe Window's Ultra series extruded aluminum are meant to mimic the profiles and look of wood. Integrity Wood Ultrex is also a good alternate like others have suggested. Looks like a traditional wood window but has durable fiberglass on the exterior. Most of the major brands (Marvin, Kolbe, Jeldwen, Pella) have decent all wood windows, but be prepared to paint them every few years and be willing to keep them well maintained.

I am a lover of historic homes. I know exactly what you mean about vinyl windows. They look cheap. I am a fan of actual old wood windows. You know, the ones your contractor wants to rip out and replace with vinyl?? Yes, they have to be scraped and painted. BUT...the homeowner can, with a little training, we taught to care for them...replace glass, putty, repair the pieces. Some of these windows have survived for over 100 years to be replaced with crappy plastic windows carrying a 20 year warranty in order to achieve energy savings. And most wood windows these days are $300+...they are double paned, filled with gas, etc. I *think* what this poster is talking about is getting a simple, old-fashioned, wood, double-hung, single paned glass window that looks beautiful. Maybe not. These are available if you can find them in your area (the Northeast appears to have them at local hardware stores while Texas doesn't carry them at all). Check out Indow window inserts if you are concerned about efficiency. On another note, having taken some woodworking classes, I would like to say that if you are looking for a simple wood window, it is not outside the purview of your ability to build them yourself after doing proper research. If you are that set on having them, you could give it a shot on a shed, etc, and see how it goes. It is my understanding that most loss of energy in a home is through air leaks, not necessarily through window glass....but I am not an expert in any of these areas....
