1x4 is installed around the opening of windows before install?

We are in the process of building a new home and the builder added a 1x4 around every single window opening before they install the windows. So the windows will be nailed to the 1x4 installed of the wall sheating. I asked him why they installed this before the windows are installed and he said that the window needs to be popped out a little since we are installing brick and adding brickmould.

I have never seen a 1x4 added to the out side opening of the window before they install it.

We have 2x6s exterior walls and the window jam sizes are 6 9/16. And we purchased Jeld Wen Siteline EX casement clad / wood windows.

Is this a good idea or not? This sounds like it could be a problem for leaking and incorrect installation. Has anyone ever seen this done.

Shouldn't be too difficult to get the flashing details correct but it might be an issue if the jamb thickness is specified based on it being flush to the exterior and not on top of the 1x4.

Exactly as wow stated, on the jamb with though you should be fine if either jamb extensions (2X4 window jamb and other depth framing) or drywall returns were planed.

I am in the process of replacing a window, in my 60 year old brick home. It too has 1x4's around the window openings.

The brick comes within 3/4" of the 2x4 framing. The 1x4 adds another 3/4" - so there is 1 1/2" reveal for the brickmold. I'm using this 1 1/2" for the nailing flange on the window.

Ok Thanks. Yeah the jam width of the window will be flush with the 1x4 on the exterior. So it sounds like we will be fine.

wow's issue was more to do with the interior as was my explanation of the fixes.

+1 to the above advice. It will take a little extra work on the flashing detail, but nothing crazy. Sounds legit.
