Therma Tru is a good mid-grade door and I would not recomend going below that.

ThermaTru is a well produced door.

Where is the home located? Simonton is a good window but lacks some of the fit and finish of the nicer vinyl windows.

Based on you general region of the country, there may be better options available.

Simonton and Thermatru fit each of their product categories about the same, and in fact, they are under the same parent company if I'm not mistaken.
Both are solid, above average offerings, and can be a good choice for the right price. That said, neither would be considered elite offerings by most measures.
As MWM said, I would not consider anything cheaper than TT. Have you looked at their Fiberclassic/Smooth Star lines? A bit less than the Classic Craft which is actually quite nice.
I'd also consider Polaris and homeGuard doors, and then of course Provia which is a great product.
Where are you located? That will dictate what window products are available... By the fact that you mentioned Menards I'll assume that it is somewhere in the Mid West, so you should have HiMark, Okna, SUnrise, Softlite, and polaris available to you. Each manufacturer has a "good, better, best" lineup, so there should be something to fit your budget as long as it is realistic.
