What new construction window company to use in NY?

I've been calling around trying to get some price quotes on some windows. I'm not sure what brand one company gave me quotes from but the other gave us quotes from United Windows. I've never heard of them so I don't know how good they are to use.

What would be a good brand of single hung windows to use for the northern part of NY? We want something that isn't to cheap but also isn't ripping a hole in our pockets to buy. We need something that will keep the cold air out.

I'm also looking for sliding glass patio doors to use in our living room.

Also when it comes to Low-E, argon, tempered glass what is the best to use? I don't really know much about the glass and insulating differences.

I looked up the window series #2901 on the other quote sheet and it seems like they might be the SilverLine Vinyl. Are they any good?

I can't find any reviews for United but all the SilverLine ones weren't good reviews. United is a small window and door company. They may do better quality since they aren't as big while they are getting a name for themselves.
My SIL went with the company that quoted us for United and her windows are good. We may go with them.
As far as the patio sliding glass door are we aren't sure what to do. It's either the ReliaBilt or United. The ReliaBilt are only $545 for the same features as the United. The United are around $971.

If you sister in law is happy with them, that is a start.

The only comment I would add to that is that often time, a family member or friend does not have a huge sample study (i.e. number of unit installs) to draw from or a really good sample study in terms of the life of the installed product.

They can probably very much comment on the install quality and professionalism of the company but that might be where I would limit my assessment too.

What are the thermal and air infiltration numbers on the window and patio door quoted?

stay away from silverline. i have to replace all 18 windows in my 15 year old home! terrible junk!
