Awkward Wedding Situation - Please help!

My stepdaughter is getting married in a couple months. My husband has been estranged from his son, his son's wife and their 3 toddlers for a few years now, since they got married actually. This is the choice of the son's wife, not my husband's and certainly not mine. My husband has done everything he can to fix this situation but he has not been allowed to see his grandchildren, at all, he has never seen them. And just to give you a little background, the wife's reason for all this is because we weren't willing to pay for 1/2 of her lavish wedding, the one that her and her parents couldn't afford, so we were uninvited to their wedding a few years ago. So now my stepdaughter is getting married, both her brother and his wife are in the wedding. And the children too. I need some tips on how to get thru this day, mainly for my husband's sake. It's going to be difficult. I went to the bridal shower and ignored them and had a great time. Trust me, this girl is evil and will make that day awkward and hurtful for my husband if she can, not caring that it's someone else's wedding day. Any advice you can give would be appreciated. I just want a peaceful day for my husband, a nice wedding for my stepdaughter, and no drama.

Smile. Be polite. Be gracious. Be warm. Be the model of proper behavior.

If she's truly evil, that will infuriate her more than anything else. And if she's not, it's the best thing you could possibly do.

We are having my daughter's wedding reception in our back yard on the same weekend. We are about 2 hours north of you in south central Pennsylvania, Zone 6. I plan to have the beds freshly-mulched and neatly edged. Am trying to stay up with pruning and cutting back my annuals to keep them blooming as long as possible. A couple of weeks before the wedding I plan to go to a "dig-it-yourself" nursery to dig chrysanthemums which I will plug in the bare spots. For the front porch, I plan to buy the larger chrysanthemums that are offered for sale inexpensively at the grocery stores here. Is your reception going into the evening hours? Sunset in our area on that date is around 6:40 PM. I am making hanging votives out of 1/2 pint Ball jars and wire and aiming for a total of 100 to hang in the trees. I am also thinking of making luminaries to light a path from the parking area to the tent. I do think the single most important thing you can do is have the beds neatly edged and the mulch newly applied. We have rented a power edger in the past and it is well-worth the $60 charge. I think a reception like this is fun to plan for, although a lot of work!!

Hi again. Further responses have given us more to think about. There won't be any reception after the couple return. Because we both have such large families, they are basically eloping (but graciously gave immediate family the option to join them) because they cannot afford the expense such a large reception would entail. Phoning the absent friends and relatives would mean calling almost 400 people, so everyone thought a mailed announcement would be much less time consuming. However, I can understand how some people feel that any type of formal announcement would appear to be a gift solicitation. My future DIL truly is a very sentimental young lady who has saved every card she has ever received since she was about 10 years old. She honestly hoped she could receive cards commemerating her MARRIAGE to my son, even if they could not invite our huge families to their wedding. But it has been pointed out that this is tacky or might not be possible without appearing like there is some ulterior motive. Well, I'll pass everything on to them and let the cards fall where they may, I guess. Thanks for all your input!

geokid, that is actually what I think my husband and I will be doing! What a coincidence! Over the weekend, we tried almost all the layouts suggested (much to my husband and everyone who had to help's horror), even went back and forth a few times, and have settled on two arrangements that will work best for us. In either arrangement, the sofa is going to face the fireplace. We'll have two slimmer side chairs with a opposite from the sofa. We most likely will have the TV mounted on the long wall with a smaller cabinet or mounted cubbies/shelves (something) for the electronics. I might add in a small tufted bench opposite the TV if we need more seating, but the two side chairs should work for now, and when my family/friends come over to play video games (which seems to be really often lately), we'll pull the chairs over. But realistically, we all sit on the floor. The piano will stay along the stairs, and to balance the open wall space between the piano and the sofa, we'll mount some shelves for decor and books. We tried mounting the TV over the fireplace, and I surprisingly liked it, too! It totally cleared up the floor space and made everything so open, but...it was kind of uncomfortable to look up at the TV. I'm only 5'3"; I don't mind a few minutes like that, but not for a couple of hours and not for game-playing. It's fine for my husband, though. I'm still keeping this an option, as I think we won't really know what'll work for us until we start buying some new furniture. I tried placing the piano in the dining room; no good because it ate up too much room. The bookcases are currently there, and I kind of like it! LOL. We have no dining table yet, so it feels like a special reading room. Haha! I like the idea of the bench along the window. If our chandelier was centered in the room, would it look weird for the table to be off-center? Otherwise, my plan was to buy a narrow table, have bench seating on one side (probably closer to the bar area) and regular chairs the other side.

I forgot to say COUNTER HEIGHT table. Oh you're gonna sit at this table. The height is just so nice. You'll see. Trust me on this one lol. Make sure the space between the chair seat and table top looks like this. Some sets the seat is too low and the tabletop too high-- like at your chin...dumb. Square set -Ashley Hazelteen.

Sweeby is right. Just steer clear of the daughter-in-law.

If you can somehow do it, though, it would be great if you could have a nice moment or two with your stepson and the children. I'm sure we don't know the whole story, though -- for example, how the rest of the extended family lines up in all this.

Anyway, what else can you do? Simply refuse to participate in any drama or scenes. Focus, and help keep the focus, elsewhere. Your stepdaughter will be grateful.

Of course I agree with sweeby and gellcom.

I don't know if this is the type of advice you are looking for or not. But my husband has some very unpleasant relatives who are deliberately rude and hurtful just because it's funny to them to make fun of others. When we have to be around them, I focus (before the event and during) on how wonderful my husband is. I remind myself that going to the event, smiling, not reciprocating the unpleasantness is my gift of love to him. Whenever they are mean, I just fix a picture in my head of the wonderful things my husband does for me and concentrate on that.

The last time I was at my SIL's house, I went over to the sink and washed the dishes so my back would be turned to all her friends, so they wouldn't see me if I started to cry while they laughed at me. Honestly, the only way I got through that evening with a shred of dignity was to be thankful over and over for my wonderful husband. That and prayer. I tell you that to let you know that I understand what it's like to be in a very painful situation where people who should love you and be kind instead act cruelly with seeming impunity. It's a hard place to be.

Fortunately my husband has said no more. But rising above the situation carried me a long way for a long time, and I'm glad I did it as best I could. I'm also glad I don't have to do it very often anymore!

I suppose I'm much too late to this post, but what the others said is very true - be the paragon of a kind mother(in-law), show the daughter-in-law that you don't care for her petty, nasty attitude. And it's your stepdaughter's day, anyway - focus on her, and make sure that your husband focuses on the young couple's happiness. No need for him to come in contact with the step-daughter other than a polite "hello".
Regardless of how it went, I hope it turned out well for you all.
