So here's my dress...it's wrinkly from being just pulled out of the box...and I need a crinoline...and I wore a strapless bra that I shouldn't have. Other than that...here it is.

I'd like to remove the train, I thought about making a wedding album cover out of it. FMIL suggested I cut it off after the wedding, but I'm not a fan of bustles. I might go with a french bustle though...I think they are very pretty.

DLM, I think that you will never be sorry to have kept them. To keep them from being seen as "clutter" after you're gone, get them them properly packed and stored and then pick the right person to have custody of them for the next generation. It may be one of your DIL, or if you have nieces or nephews, perhaps one of them. I'd choose someone who appreciates family stories, and who would be a good - and generous with access -custodian of shared family history. In my DH's family when I got engaged there was a small family gathering,(mostly female) and the wedding dresses and some other family wedding memorabilia were sort of the organizing theme for the party. It was a great way to meet my some of my in-laws-to-be and feel included in my new family's story, Since my engagement diamond was re-set from an family piece, everyone wanted to see it in my new ring. It was a lovely tradition and I plan to do it when my nephew finally settles on a bride - even if it seems a bit old fashioned. What else is an elderly aunt for? Many times I hear people express a bit of envy that in my family and in my DH's we have so many "heirlooms" from generations gone by. Some things have by sheer old age have now become valuable, but most still have only modest monetary value. But they all tell the stories of the family - sometimes in modest circustances and sometimes not. Each succeeding generation chose to take care of these items and pass them on,probably always at some cost of in terms of time, trouble, or even perhaps the forgone value of selling them. This speaks volumes about the values cherished and passed down in our families. And that alone is worth the effort preserving these things as totems of the clan. kathi, I know what you mean.. I used all the wedding dress, except I did have to made a new bodic...and then I added the wedding dress cap sleeves and took the ruffel from the wedding dress and added to the front of the dress.. This little grand daughter is a little on the plump side and my neice was about a size 2... the dress back was longer than the front so I did have to do some fancy foot work there to make it work.. I also was able to use the netting from the dress for her vail..then I just added some ribbons and little tiny rose buds to the waist band which was a new piece and a large bow in the back.. I also added some rose buds to each stremer of ribbon down the front of the dress. It sure did save her mother a ton on money.. as the rest of the girls dresses cost almost $100.00 or more and our cost aprox.. $6.00.. I was lucky the wedding dress was not realy fancy and I was able to wash the dress... believe it or not.. before I started.. which worked out great.. I am all for recycle when ever I can.. Ok, so repainting the room is an option: that's your out! Or should I say "easy" solution? Repaint in a color more in keeping with the gorgeous rug (which is beautiful and valuable on many levels-honeymoon purchase being one of them!). Then your window treatments (panels-maybe) will be a much easier decision. I'm not loving the panel options mentioned above, which I think are nice, but a tad too informal for the direction you have taken with your room. Plus, they are very trendy, which again is not in keeping with your traditional style. You have heirloom quality pieces there! The rug and furniture should stay. Paint is cheap (compared to the investment in good quality furniture and the rug)! That's the way to make a significant impact without breaking the bank. Take a good look at the colors in the rug. On my monitor I see blue as the primary color, but monitors vary. Go to the paint store and bring some sample cards home, narrow it down and then go back and buy some paint samples and splotch away. In any case, have fun with this project!

Thank you everyone for the encouraging words and wonderful compliments! The party went great :-) Now it's time to make the grocery list for the family party next weekend, no calling the caterer next time...lol. But at least my house is ready! So many of you asked about the door sprays. I found those in a booth at an antique mall early in the fall. They were an autumn arrangement and I liked the look of them so much that after Thanksgiving I just added the sprigs of red berries and decided they would work through the Christmas season too. The holder is a cone shaped metal (tin?) with florist foam stuck down in it to insert all the dried leaves and stems. After I bought the arrangements I saw the holders sold separately at another shop. They were $15 each with no arrangement. I took a close-up picture and another one of how I mounted it on the door. I used the 3m Command hooks that peel and stick on. Then I used a little spot of the Bluestick putty like teachers used to stick things on the walls to anchor them toward the bottom since they are so tall. It seems to be working. They've stayed up since October. sippimom...You asked about the living room rug. It's Karastan and the design is Paysage. Whenever you look up Paysage it looks nothing like the real thing. My living room picture is an accurate representation of the colors in it. Thank you for the compliments :-) You must be somewhere down around the Oxford area? It's fun to find people here that are close by!

Absolutely gorgeous! I'm not sure you even need a crinoline. Unless you want the poof, that is.

I'd definitely skip the crinoline with a perfect figure like yours! I'm sure it would be gorgeous either way, but I'd vote to keep the long, smooth vertical line (and not have anything scratchy and noisy underneath). I also like your idea about removing the train. It's beautiful, and it looks so elegant in formal portraits, but I think trains are sort of a nuisance when they are down, and I have seen too many brides have to take a break to re-bustle because the bustling fell down. Here, too, though, it's a no-lose choice: either way will look great.

Andrea and Gellchom, I don't want a large crinoline (I actually didn't want one at all) but the dress kind of falls in the front, at the bottom of the skirt it curves in at the centre and we couldn't fix that...perhaps if I get it hemmed it wouldn't do that anymore. I was only thinking of getting one that's more of a slip just to straighten out the bottom. It only just occured to me that hemming it (it is a little long for me as I was already wearing my shoes) might fix the problem so I will look into that.

Gellchom, I also have seen the train have to be re-bustled and have no desire to have to do that.

yep, I see, too. I was picturing one of those really wide ones. I think you are talking about a crinoline that doesn't make the skirt poof out, just sort of holds it neatly while keeping the vertical line. Is that right?

Wow, it really is SO pretty! Isn't this fun?

Gellchom, yes, I'm talking about just enough to fill out the bottom of the skirt...I don't want any poof. The skirt has a built in crinoline from the knee down, so I'm thinking of just adding another one to that to hold the bottom out. My friends mom has made wedding dresses and would be able to do this for me very easily apparently.

Boo, I love all the beading at the back and the laces.
