May I come in?

Hi All,

I'm usually over at the Kitchen Table, but I've recently been asked to be a bridesmaid for my best friend's wedding. It's going to be in December, so for the next five months I'll be in wedding-land helping her out. It'll be a little difficult b/c I'm in California and she's in Alaska. :) Also, this is my third wedding to be in, but I'm a bit rusty, so is it okay if I come to you for any advice on things?

My first question is, is there a recommended wedding planner for someone who isn't sure if she wants to have a formal wedding or casual? She asked me if I knew of one. Thanks so much!

There are several creative souls here who are wedding planners by profession. They have provided priceless information in response to posted questions.

MY first thought on your question (I am NOT a wedding planner) is that your friend needs someone who works in Alaska.

Congratulations on being in the wedding. Have fun helping the bride and enjoy the journey.

LOL, thank you, Dian! I think I meant to say, "recommended wedding planner BOOK"...LOL!! Dummy me. ;)

Moving bonsai around isn't just difficult or a pain in the neck for me. I have three that are simply impossible. If someone were to tell me that they weigh 150 pounds, I would believe it. 50 years ago they were five gallon nursery stock. Now, some of them have eight to ten inch trunks and I can't get them through my sliding glass door. I just kick and shove them around as necessary. :(

Thank you all for your warm welcome. I would have answered sooner, but I decided to find out why the GW hates my ellipses. So I grabbed up my trusty axe to chop my way through the dense jungle of complex computerese to find out. (Do the Nerds really have to talk like they do on the web? I wonder if they're just showing off.) Anyway, it turns out that Linux does not shake hands with Microsoft when they process ellipses. I don't know what Linux did to annoy you Mr. Gates, but I wish that you two would makeup and get this straightened out. I have decided that there are ways to get around this - short of switching to Microsoft. Maybe if I just complete my sentences without using an ellipise, but I rather like the dangling, airiness of them. I could type out the word ellipis or perhaps typing period comma space, period comma space, period may trick the computer. But maybe it would be easier just to get used to Ã¯Â¿Â½. If this were audio, I imagine its what the bleep used to cover up a naughty word would look like. Again, thank you

Here is my very favorite lemon recipe..... Lemon Brownies recipe Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Use 9X13 inch pan. Brownies 1.5 cups flour 1.5 cups sugar 1 cup real butter- room temperature 4 eggs- room temperature juice from half a lemon....I use over 1/4 cup zest from one lemon (1 tsp. baking powder) I use it but can be left out. Glaze 1 cup powdered sugar 2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice and zest as desired. I use lots. Grease and flour pan. Put dry ingredients into a bowl. Add butter and mix. ( I use food processor and just pulse it a few times.) Stir together eggs, juice and zest and stir into batter. ( I use food processor for this, too.) I don't over mix it. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes or until set. Original recipes call for cooling the brownies before mixing up glaze but I mix it up after removing from oven and add mixed glaze while still very warm. I am fortunate to have a huge, very productive lemon tree in our yard. I sometimes zest some lemon rinds and let them air dry.....and I keep some lemon juice in the freezer for when I am too lazy to go and pick some.

I fully agree. The more organic matter you can put on or in the soil the better....up to a certain point, of course. I consider my whole garden a compost pile. Mulches should be planted with groundcovers and then should be top dressed with leaves or woodchips annually. The more textured the mulch and groundcovers you have, the more creatures it supports. As a wedding planner, I suggest that you send your friend either "The Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Wedding" or "Weddings for Dummies." Neither one will specifically outline the pros and cons of a casual versus semi-formal or formal wedding, but they will help her, and you, to understand the basic structure of a wedding.

To decide on how formal the wedding might be, your friend should think about: 1. her lifestyle - does she like formal sit-down dinners or is she a more casual person 2. available reception locations in her community - it is possible that most of the facilities are fairly casual or they may be quite formal. That will help her make a decision. Most weddings today tend to be either casual or semi-formal, particularly in places like Alaska. It is possible that if she tries to have a formal wedding, it will cost her a great deal to create the right atmosphere.

Thanks so much, Sweet Pea!! Though I have to admit, I hate those names. It's one thing to buy that book for yourself, but another to buy it for someone else, LOL! I was going to surprise her with it. She's far from an "idiot" or "dummy". :)

i'm using The Ultimate Wedding Planning Guide! i have found it very helpful.... aside from offering adequate space for writing notes and lists and budget planning, it has helpful tips on every aspect of the wedding from start to finish. i reccommend either that book or one similar to it, because all the worksheets are already provided all you have to do is fill in the blanks. your friend won't have to waste time trying to get it all organized... the book does that for her... i love mine....
