Color for the flower girl dress

My daughters wedding is in September-her bridesmaids will be wearing dark red gowns (not burgandy). I am trying to figure out what color to make the flower girl gown, as I dont want her to look like a little bride in all white too. I am including the link so you can see the style of dress. I love the over skirt and gauntlets, but not sure if it would be too much. Any ideas surely appreciated!

Possibly make the under dress in the dark red, and the overskirt in a pale pink? I know "people" say you can't mix red and pink - but I've never believed them. It's one of my favorite combinations.

A dark pink under dress and white overskirt would also work.

Hi, oeltjen! I also hate when the flower girls look like mini-brides! WHAT is the point and who's the bride, anyway?! Our DD is also getting married in September! May I suggest a very small print for the under-dress (the main part), even a very polished cotton with tiny red roses or berries....there are gorgeous prints in small patterns now in dressy fabrics...I'd make the over-flouce in a white organza, with a slight shimmer to it. You could still see the under-skirt thu it. I don't care for the harshmess of red under with white over...seems it would be getting to look a lot like Christmas. A tiny "Laura Ashley" type poly-cotton print would do nicely, I think....easy to find these days, even in Wal-Mart! ;-) Hope that helps! WE have 3 months to go! Time is flying! Our DD's bridesmaids are in taupe satin dresses with burgandy sashes...Hope my suggestion helps!

Hi sunnyca, They are actually on 1/2" copper pipe. I just leaned them up against the fence, to take a quick picture. I had a really hard time down sizing my original pictures!! Then it would only let me put up one picture on at a time? I put up a picture of my first glass garden lady & had to switch the title around for it to accept it. I'll have to practice more to get the hang of posting pictures!

At the craft store, you can buy "waste canvas". You machine baste it on most any fabric you wish to cross stitch on. It is an open weave, with a colored thread every 10" so you can keep track of your count. You do your cross stitch design over both this canvas and your garment. Then you wet the garment and the waste canvas sort of just comes apart and you pull it out thread by thread. Voila!

Don't forget the boys too. I have a vivid and wonderful memory, from my early childhood, of being dressed up by my mother for a special family function. I was primped, poked, combed and made up. It was glorious to have all the attention and the white dress was soft and silky. I was on my best behavior and everyone said I was beautiful. From then on I looked at myself a little differently and felt closer to my mother. I imagine most girls have had this experience. When do little boys get to have anything similar? I guess the closest thing would be winning at sports. My younger sister and I dressed up our little brother in frilly stuff for years (mainly in the winter when the snow was too deep). The three of us are grown and married now and still very close to each other. Was it that early play that helped us bond? When my son was well advanced into the terrible twos, I spent a lot of time thinking about the above questions. My daughter was born when he was two. We had prepared him for it. But eight months later he was defiant and demanding, This is my son I'm thinking about -- from a mothers prospective -- not a little girl playing with her brother. Although my parents did know about us dressing up my brother. Actually they took their "three girls" out to Mc Donalds or the movies every once and a while. Any way I started researching what happens to little boys that have worn girls' clothes. The answer is not much. If kids grow up to be gay, it has nothing to do with what clothes they have had on. We wear guy's clothes all the time. Also some men (adult cross-dressers) have said that when they were kids and wanted to experiment, they were not allowed to. So it became a really big deal for them. They started sneaking, and felt guilty. So I paid a visit to my local thrift shop and found a wonderful little flower girl slip and dress for cheap, some ruffled nylon panties from a square dance shop, a pair of black shoes and white tights from a neighbor. Then on his third birthday we had his special dress up day. His father, my mother and few neighbor moms and children came over for the party. Everyone made a fuss over him and he had ball. Heck he was the bell of the ball. He is six now, the defiance and other problems diminished and then disappeared about two months after that first party. There have been several more since, all in dresses at his request. Robbys' little sister is getting his hand-me -downs. That wonderful little flower girl dress has been very busy. Many of the mothers of Robbys' friends have asked to borrow it for their son's parties (the boys want their turn). Robby is well adjusted and happy. He is devoted to his baby sister and looks out for her. He plays well with others. He enjoys both boy and girl activities. He is looking forward to first grade . At school he knows that he needs to be in boy clothes. But I will be happy to help the next time he wants to play dress-up.

As far as dress styles goes, the two don't have to be the same. No-one would expect a 16 month old to have the same style dress as a 9 year old, just as they wouldn't expect a 9 year old and an 18 year old to be identically dressed. There will be enough "match", if matching is important, if you use the same materials in both dresses. Yes, do the chiffon hem separately to the satin hem. Apart from that it will look better, you will have a hard row to hoe if you try to hem them together AND have both layers hang properly together. Joan has described the fishing line technique a little more clearly than I originally did- you lay the fishing line right on the edge of the chiffon (or a poofteenth in from the edge). I don't understand why you seem to be set on the idea of doubling the chiffon (you've mentioned it in both your posts now). As I said in my earlier post, more layers of chiffon will obscure the underneath fabric. So if you double the chiffon, the effect will be to make the dress look like it is made of chiffon, rather than chiffon over satin (as it would look with one layer of chiffon). In that case, you may as well save the expense of the satin and use something else for the underdress so as to feature the chiffon. (And if you do double the chiffon, hem each layer separately.) As the other Colleen mentioned, you should make the satin skirt and the chiffon skirt sections separately before slipping the satin skirt inside the chiffon skirt and then basting them together at the top and gathering as a unit. Then attach, treating the chiffon side as the "right side of the fabric" for the purposes of the pattern instructions. By doing this the side and back seams of each layer will be separate from each other- they should not be sewn together, except at the zipper, if there is one and it extends that far down. I would wait to hem until the dress is completed and the hem has had a chance to do any dropping it is going to.

Following on from Glitter's idea, how about the top left or bottom left styles in white with a small red print or even a narrow, mattress-tick type stripe, a red sash and red piping trim around the neck and armholes, and a slightly wider red trim at the hem?
I think the panniers are too fussy and "bride-dressy", and the gauntlets might be an invitation to the flower girl to fidget with them during the ceremony (sorry, I know you said you liked them :-) ).

Another option would be to use another jewel toned color in the general color scheme. I can imagine a color scheme of red with gold or purple or blue or chocolate or silver. Then give the accent color to the flower girl.

All in all, I'd ask the flower girl if she likes the overskirt and the gauntlets. She might like them, she might not. The overskirt looks a lot like Disney's Cinderella and Belle. The gauntlets are kinda cool. If she is happy in her gown, it will show in her behavior and pictures. Personally, I wouldn't mind the flower girl fidgeting with the gauntlets. Better, in my mind, for her to fidget focusing on herself than focusing on something or someone else.

I personally wouldn't want a flower girl looking like a bride either---I feel there needs to be a definite difference between the bride and the others. It's still personal choice. Plus, you want her to look the part and not like she's playing dress-up. I went to your link and thought the dress looked too much like a little bride too---beautiful little dress though! There were 2 or 3 other illustrations of that basic dress (without over skirt and gauntlets) to the left of the picture. My daughter chose a basic style like that for her flower girl---she didn't want anything too fussy. It was short sleeved (softly capped), plain round neckline, with a matching satin, wide ribbon sash that tied at the waist. She found it locally and the store ordered it. (I believe the brand was called "Little Angels") Now... she wanted her flower girl's dress to be the same color and fabric as her gown, but not to look like a little bride. She had first chosen a bridal gown of silk duchesse satin in ivory and was then very lucky to find what she had in mind for the little girl. She had decided early on that she wanted her bridesmaids in simple long, black shantung silk dresses with bouquets of very dark red roses. They were dark alright, but beautiful and the perfect choice for this black with ivory bride's wedding---brighter red would have been too harsh with the black dresses. (they were called "Black Magic") We had looked at soooooo many bridal magazines and I'm sure you guys have as well----you just can't help it! I'm sure you've seen pictures of real weddings in these bridal magazines. I saw a picture of a bride and her maids that was so stunning, then looked again and the bridesmaids dresses were all white too (or ivory BUT totally different style from the bride's). That wouldn't be my personal choice but it WAS beautiful. Who'da thunk! Your daughter will be beautiful as will her maids AND the flower girl. I wish you well. It's a lot to take on but a very fun, special and precious time with your daughter. (When shopping we happened to see a very dark red bridesmaid's dress on display and we both just stopped---the color was stunning. And a Vera Wang---$$$$$$. We could only look, but it was fun then we had to get back to reality)

I agree with Glitter and ColleenOZ. I think a cute print (I can picture the kind from walmart) with red piping detail would be perfect. I personally am not such a fan of stripes...but that could just be me.

By the way, I love the pattern (without the overskirt and the gautlets). If I can't get the dress that I want maybe I'll get that pattern and make the dress.
