Rehearsal dinner ideas?

Have any of you hosted a rehearsal dinner at home? We're considering a bbq, likely kabobs, salads, punch, drinks, etc...Just wondering if some of you would like to share ideas or experiences for this type of event, esp what foods you served....Thanks!

We are having ours at home and are planning on an italian dinner... spaghetti w/ meatballs and lasagne with 2 types of salads (spinach and our favorite restuarant's signature salad... we are getting their large take out servings of salad and spaghetti, but are making everything else ourselves...) various appetizers (garlic bread, bruschetta, etc...) and cheesecake and cookies for dessert.

Our "rehearsal dinner" is open to all of the out-of-towners, which is the majority of the guestlist, so we are planning a large meal... Lasagne is easy to make early and then freeze...

Duckyhead - Friends of mine had a similar dinner at home in their basement. They had a number of small tables with white and red check tablecloths and candles dripping in wine bottles.

It was so much fun, and not too expensive.

In years past I have had quite a few big out door parties. My back yard alone is about 1/2 an acre....and ringed with bushes and trees and gardens. The best solution I found was something called "skeeter beater"...granular stuff you sprinkle around a few hours before the party. It worked fairly in combo with yard guard....but every flower it got on became discolored in a day or 2...some leaves too...spotted. New growth and flowers covered it up but.... If I were doing sometning like that now, I would start now being vigilant about any water. I would have a dunk in every birdbath and pool and ask my neighbors to do the same. And I would start soon with spraying every few days to reduce the population. I know...I hate to put that much poision into the air but.... Then the day of....I would do lots of Yard guard....fans aw far as I could string them. Not blowing from the shrubbery into the crowd but from the crowd to the shrubs. and I would have a table with every type of repellant I could think of. No citronella candles...gag! I don't know what your time frame is, but skeeters become most active at dusk, It won't be too bad before that time and once it gets good and dark they sort of go to sleep. So perhaps a second run around the perimeter of the yard about 7:00 would further knock them back. Good luck....sounds lovely! Linda C

I think it would be hard to do a BBQ yourself for that many people, especially out of town. Even if you were on familiar turf and had your own refrigerator, etc., it is a big weekend for you; you want to be able to enjoy yourself, not worry about cooking for 60. I do like the idea of a BBQ, but I would still hire someone to do it, and be sure to choose a spot with an indoor pavilion in case of rain. Also consider that not all venues, especially public parks, permit alcohol, if that's an issue. I would either use an inexpensive restaurant or a caterer, or if that's out of range, something you can purchase, like sandwich platters, fried chicken, pasta & salad bar, or pizzas, at some pleasant location. You don't know the area, so it's hard for you to know about caterers and venues. Your son lives there, but I gather he doesn't know these things, either. But I bet he DOES know some local maven who does. Ask him to ask that person if s/he would mind if his mom called for some advice -- I guarantee you, s/he will be flattered and happy to help (wouldn't you?). Tell that person your approximate head count and budget and ask for some ideas. That will get you started. Have fun!

Sweeby, I hate "dressy casual"! To me, that translates to, "Casual, but we don't trust you not to show up in ripped jeans and a filthy T-shirt." sweet pea says that that is indeed what some people do. Well, maybe so -- but (especially given that those people probably would dress that way no matter WHAT you put on the invitation) I wouldn't insult the other guests by indicating that assumption. Personally, I don't think I'd write anything other than "black tie," "dressy," or "casual," on an invitation, and and I really hate "original" things like "festive casual" or "celebratory attire" -- they are just plain confusing, and they sound like the hosts are trying too hard. We recently went to a wedding the invitation to which said, "No neckties!" I know the couple wanted it casual, and they probably thought the wording was cute, but I felt that was just plain bossy and controlling. Some of the older male guests (including the groom's father) feel very uncomfortable NOT wearing a tie to even a casual event (not a picnic or softball game, but you know what I mean). They could just have written "casual" and everyone would have dressed appropriately, and if some men wore ties, so what? Beats antagonizing your guests before the wedding even starts. You can dress your bridal party to match (and, ironically, they DIDN'T), but not your guests! In fact, I am more and more not writing anything at all. The style of the invitation and the time, type, and location of the event really give anyone who cares all the information they need. Suppose you got an invitation with paper and font that are pretty but dignified, a (readable) script font, and fairly formal wording: Please join us for Rehearsal dinner Saturday, June 31 7:30 pm La Palma Ristorante / at our home 123 Main Street AnyTown Muriel and Waldo Quilter RSVP: (000) 555-1212 or this one, on day-glo paper with a border of balloons and a goofy font: WOW!!! With just 24 hours to go, let's pull out all the stops and have a bash in honor of Petunia and Cuthbert! Clambake -n- kegger Saturday, June 31 Party Beach 7:30 p.m.-??? Wouldn't you know how to dress for each of these parties, without being given a dress code? For your party, quilter, I would either write nothing regarding dress, or, if you feel that it is still ambiguous (like if it's at a home), then I would write "casual." If the invitation is anything but ultra-casual, people will know to dress decently. No one is going to wear dressy party clothes. If someone wears nice jeans and a nice top, and someone else is in a suit, it isn't a disaster -- after all, you might very well see both at a good restaurant. The guests don't have to match each other exactly, and you don't want to risk casting a pall on your party by appearing overly controlling of the guests' clothes.

Intrestingly, I was reading the big Emily Post's Etiquette (15th edition, which is a few years old now; she's up to the 17th), and it said: "All the members of the bridal party (with the exception of ver young flower girls, pages, or ring bearers), the immediate famliies of the bride and groom, and out-of-town relatives who have arrived for the wedding are invited." Not "sometimes invited"; "are invited." In my two areas (small-town midwest, and big-city NYC), that doesn't happen. She goes on: "if facilities and finances permit, a few very close friends are often included, especially whose who come from a distance." (but then, they'd be "out of town guests," no? I sense some inconsistency) "If the clergyman is a prsonal friend, or comes from out of town, he and his wife should also be invited. "Husbands, wives, fiances, and live-in companions of the attendants go to the rehearsal dinner, but "dates" ar enot included." There are seating diagrams, etc--she treats it much like a big wedding. And though she says 'music and dancing are not at all essential.." she also says "Other[s] [rehearsal dinners] are far more elaborate. A strolling violinist or accordionist may play romantic background music, or there may be a full orchestra and after-dinner dancing." That seems way overboard to me! and, int he section on menu: "when the wedding is large and formal, the style of the rehearsal dinner is too, and the meal compares to that of any formal dinner. However such an elaborate and expensive menu is in no way necessary. If the wedding is informal and nontraditional, the menu should be also." I really disagree w/ the implication that the rehearsal dinner *should* be formal if the wedding is. A contrast in tone is kind of nice. And all this sort of implies a fanciness and a scale that I think is too likely to compete w/ the rehearsal dinner. But I think for our OP, the fact that the hostess is worried about it being too big and too expensive, that recruiting someone else to organize outings, etc., is a better idea.

Duckyhead, ours will also be open to many out-of-towners as well as the wedding party, and for the life of me, why didn't I think of lasagna?! I make a great one! I could do a couple: a meat one and a vegetarian one(my favourite!). We love bruschetta and our fresh garden basil will be so wonderful by then, esp for the lasagnas! And yes, we could order salads in from our favourite restaurants, too!
And they DO freeze well! I'm also decorating the wedding cake that day, too, so it'll save me tons of work if I make them way ahead and freeze them! I love it! Also, I was worried about the weather in early Sept as far as a bbq goes, so this will be perfect! As for desserts, I think a nice, rich ice-cream with our fresh home-made strawberry sauce and real whipped cream. Thanks, Duckhead!! What a great idea! :-)))

Glitter... YUM!!! I'm so glad that I helped spark your culinary creativity :) I love fresh basil from the garden... mmmmm.... strawberrys and ice cream... yumm... :)

Ours is in 2 weeks, so I will let you know if we find any snags in the plans!

We had our son's rehearsal dinner in our back yard and it was a great success. We prepared sloppy joes in the crock pot so that they could cook while we decorated at the church and had the rehearsal. Everything was ready to serve when we returned home. It was June, so we had watermelon for dessert. We invited a number of "extra" people too, including the pianist and wife, the soloist and her husband, the minister and wife, and any out-of-town relatives who were already here. We hung a pinata in our apple tree for the children and they had great fun with it. By being at a private home, everything was relaxed and there was no need to feel rushed.

I discussed the menu with my DH, and he said we'd have everything catered by an Italian restaurant here! Woohoo!! Love it! But the ice-cream, home-made strawberry sauce and real whipped cream stays! ;-D Good luck with your wedding Duckyhead....and yes, please let us know how everything turned out!
Sweet-Pea, that's exactly what we thought about having it at home: casual, mingling of new relatives, out-of-towners...and much praying for sunshine! ;-D Thanks for responding! Nice to have it all over, hm?

Speaking as an old married woman (17 years) I always vote for an at-home rehearsal dinner. We were married in January and my rehearsal dinner was a barbeque - complete with a hayride from the church to the groom's family home.

My cousin was married in August and had a backyard luau - the guys all wore grass skirts - it was hoot!

My sister had an Italian dinner - lots of candlelight, yummy food - very relaxing and fun.

I think we tend to make too much of a production of the rehearsal dinners - they should be fun and relaxing for everyone, there's enough stress the following day!

Our rehearsal dinner turned out very nicely, despite a few snags... here's a couple things I learned:

- When making all of the food for both the rehearsal and the wedding (Including the cake!!) make sure to be *EXTREMELY* organized and in communication with all people involved with the cooking. We had some major miscommunications with my mom (who seemed to beleive that she could do everything herself and didn't realize she was "crazy" until the morning of the rehearsal!) so the rehearsal dinner food wasn't made until the day of, when it was supposed to have been made a week ahead of time and frozen... my brother and I ended up making the food with some help from other people while also making sure that the house got cleaned and decorated!

- A coordinator of some sort is very useful when it comes to rehearsing... we had people sitting around waiting for one thing to happen while others were outside waiting for the people from inside to come out... we ended up starting the rehearsal more than an hour late! And once it started we really didn't know what was going on... our officiant was my "Hubby"'s uncle and he didn't really have anything to say about the order of things...

Anyway, despite the snags, I think everything was wonderful... I'm sure that it could've gone more smoothly, but it was still very beautiful and a wonderful meal! :)

(We ended up having a spinach salad with meat lasagne and vegetarian mushroom penne - no dessert - mom forgot to make the cheesecake and remembered 30 minutes before the rehearsal...)

For my stepson's wedding rehearsal dinner, I rented a shelter at a nearby park. I put checkered tableclothes on the tables and served barbeque with all the fixings. Borrowed an old cold drink cooler for the cold drinks. It went over great!

I am having a chocolate fountain with berries and cookies. A variety of fine wines and spirits. Now we are going to be totally formal for the go through because I know suits and such can get so hot. Now everyone is allowed 1 pet if they must. We will have food for the pets in crystal bowls. All of this we will have in a full view aquarium. Hope you gals have luck
