How do I respond? Reply in the manner indicated on the invitation. RSVP and no response card: a handwritten response to the host at the return address on the envelope. Response Card: fill in and reply by the date indicated and return in the enclosed envelope. RSVP with phone number: telephone and make sure to speak in person  answering machines can be unreliable. RSVP with email: you may accept or decline electronically. Regrets only: reply only if you cannot attend. If your host doesnÂt hear from you, he is expecting you! No reply requested? Unusual, but it is always polite to let someone know your intentions. I managed to earn a Biology degree without ever learning that one - I love it and will remember it! :) I grew up in Central California where one never went empty handed to someone's house for dinner. It was usually a bottle of wine or some favorite goodie of the hosts, which, of course, I would not expect to be served with dinner. The obligation to return the invitation was true as well. I have been very surprised to learn that hostesses in New York and elsewhere around the country would consider my impeccable manners to be rudeness! It makes me doubt myself and think back to occasions here in Florida when people may not have appreciated my "thoughtfulness" - so many of my friends and neighbors here are from the north. I'm feeling embarrassed after reading this thread :(. People here are slow to respond to invitations - which I think is rude and inconsiderate, although I am sure they understand the meaning of RSVP. I've never had anyone respond one way and then do the other without phoning to say they have to change their plans - that's crazy. Elizabeth

How about this one? My sister's daughter sent out invitations to her wedding. My sister's SIL did not respond. My niece wondered if they got the invitation. When asked they said, "Oh, don't we have until September 15th to answer? They wind up sending a no without an explanation. My niece felt hurt. Turns out the reason why this aunt decided not to attend is because she felt that she wasn't close enough to the bride and that years ago she gave her a cameo necklace and thought that was the beginning of a relationship! (A relationship is calling and communicating back and forth!) My sister and her husband were upset because if nothing else, she should have attended because of the relationship she had with my sister and her husband.
