Friends Can't Attend: Videos OK?

IÂm looking for suggestions about my brotherÂs reception.

It's his first marriage, and he's over 30. The wedding will be far from home near her family, so his friends can't make it. He'd like me to participate, and I had the following idea:

IÂd like to get a 5-minute presentation from each of his old friends (we're scattered internationally, so I can't hunt them down and film them myself). They have great senses of humor and are smart and articulate, and I hope they have video recorders! I thought maybe they could each find a photo (however old) including the groom and relate something about the occasion, with a congratulations at the end. Sort of a "meet his friends" presentation since few in her family have met him, and itÂd make him feel surrounded by friends.

What do you think? Too much for the reception? Have you heard of presentations like this and do you have tips & themes & ideas?

By the way, yes - he'd LOVE this!

I think it is a great idea.

I am taking a video editing class right now that is teaching me how to edit with music and titles and add pics along with movie clips. It is really fun, and not too hard once you get the hang of it. The software is called "Vegas Video" and with it you could put all the clips together with the pictures onto 1 DVD.

I think this could be a great idea if you avoid a few pitfalls.

1) I would definitely have your brother check with his fiancee and anyone else who is hosting this wedding (like her parents). They are planning the reception and will not appreciate a "surprise" presentation. Also, you will need someone local to set up the AV stuff. If your side of the family will be giving a rehearsal dinner or hosting a hospitality room or something, that might be a better venue than the reception.

2) If it will be shown at the reception, keep the entire thing SHORT SHORT SHORT -- 8-10 minutes maximum. 5 minutes per buddy is way too long for the reception (not for a hospitality room, though, or maybe running on a loop on a TV that guests can walk up to if they choose during a cocktail hour). If you had 5 buddies at 5 minutes each, plus getting everyone's attention, that's a half hour out of a what, 3-hour? reception. Even the best slide show or video is just too long at more 8-10 minutes, especially for the guests who don't know the people in it. Trust me on this one -- I've been to dozens of parties where they had films/slide shows, and people complain like mad even when they DO know the people in them if it goes much more than 5 minutes. You don't want to kill the mood of the party. BUT -- you can have a longer version that your brother can look at on his own and share with the people who know these guys and would enjoy it.

3) Crucially important: remind these buddies that it won't just be your brother, but all these other people, including his new in-laws and perhaps grandparents and clergy, listening. So it is NOT the time to be crude, to tell embarrassing or personal stories, or to drone on about memories that are hilarious for the people who were there but that will not interest anyone else. [This isn't just advice for videos; I always get really comfortable when any of the groom's old friends get up to make a toast, as they so often fail to plan, let alone write, anything in advance, so they ramble on FOREVER with stuff that only a handful of guests at most care about: "Let's see ... what else ... oh, yeah, and then there was that time when we all ...." It gets really tedious!]

Actually, I think the ettiquette rule is that if you are attending, you are socially obligated to send a gift; if you do not attend, you are under no social obligation to send a gift. (However, a large number of people who receive invitations are genuinely delighted for the happy couple, and send a gift anyway -- even if they are unable to attend.) So bottom line -- if you go to the wedding (even if you skip the expensive reception) it costs you a gift. If you 'have an unfortunate conflict' or 'regret that you won't be able to attend' -- you're off free, and a congratulatory card is more than enough to satisfy your social obligations. Since you don't really want to go and can't really afford a gift, simply thank them for the kind the invitation, declare your regrets, and send a nice card.

Reminds me of the time my older son (about 12 at the time) got off the school bus somewhere. Where? I'm still not completely sure! (Now, this is the smart kid, not the one who really is 'dee-dee-dee'. That kid has enough sense to actually ask an adult where the heck he is, and maybe could that adult call his mom? Or better yet, to stay on the stinking school bus if he doesn't know where he is! Nope - This is the smart kid...) So we live on a tiny little street accessible only from a small street, which was under construction for some time a few years ago. Apparently one day, that small street was under so much construction that the school bus couldn't even turn down onto that street -- so they didn't. (At least, according to my kid, they didn't.) I don't know what happened to the other 20 kids or so who also live off this small street, but at some point, My Kid (the smart one) gets off the school bus alone and calls me to come pick him up. Thank goodness he had a cell phone! Him: Hi Mom - Can you pick me up? Me: Huh? Hey - You're late. Where are you? Him: Well... Me: Are you at school? Him: No - I'm on that street. Me: What? What street? What happened to the school bus? Him: Well - you know - that other street. Me: That other street? Him: Yeah - you know - that other street. Me: Near us? Him: I think so. Can you come get me? Me: You want me to get in the car and come and get you, but you can't tell me where you are? Him: Yeah. Me: That could take a while... Him: Why? Can't you leave now? Me: Yeah - but where should I go? You want me to just drive around? Him: Yeah. Me: No. Him: Wha? Me: You got off the school bus and you don't even know where you are? Is that what you're saying? And now you want me to get in the car and come look for you? What were you thinking?! Him: Wha? Me: OK - Look for a street sign. What does it say? Him: A street sign? What do they look like? Me: Wha? Him: OK - It says 'Bunker Hill' (a street, but also our neighborhood - not sure which he means) Me: OK - Now can you find another one? Him: Wha? Trying copy again I attended boarding school for my high school years. I was quite young (11) when starting my freshman year. I recall that I was very homesick the first couple of weeks. The nuns were very kind --they baked a birthday cake for my September birthday. Once I recovered from homesickness I joined the routine of the school. Although there were a few private rooms most of us slept in a large dormitory room with our 'cells' separated by curtains which could be drawn open and shut. Furniture consisted of a bed, a chair and a washstand with a pitcher and bowl. Our closets were lined up at one end of the room. To the best of my recollection our weekdays started at about 6:30 when the nun in charge of the dormitory went up and down the aisles ringing a small bell. We went to the communal bathroom to fill our pitchers with warm water which we used for our washing up, We filled a glass with cool water for tooth brushing. When we were washed and dressed we went to the chapel for daily Catholic mass. Following that we had breakfast in the refectory (dining room.). We had some time to ourselves before we assembled in the study hall before classes began. Bells were rung when classes were over and we moved from room to room in orderly lines. At noon we had lunch in the refectory with some time to ourselves before afternoon classes After school we went to the kitchen for a snack which varied from bread and jelly or peanut butter to some sort of cookies or crackers. Every afternoon following the snack one of the nuns took us out for a walk of about a mile. We were required to stay in line, two by two. After the walk there was time in study hall again, then dinner, then recreation. There was no TV in those days. I remember how excited we were when we got a radio. Sometimes one of the girls would play the piano and we would dance, the older girls teaching the younger ones. Dinner was served at 6 o'clock with an hours recreation following, then more study hall. Around 8 o'clock we went to the chapel to say the rosary, then had more time to ourselves before bed around 9:30. Sometimes on weekends we went downtown to see a movie, We had a large lawn with a tennis court and benches where we could sit and enjoy the outdoors. Saturdays and Wednesdays we signed up for our turn to have a real bath in one of the several tubs. There were no showers. On Saturdays we could press our clothes, mend, shine our shoes, set our hair, polish our fingernails, read or play games. Sunday we attended mass at the church across the street. Aside from an hour in the study hall to write letters or do homework we were pretty free to do as we chose. We could not leave the school without permission.

Can you talk with your neighbours about the tree? If it makes a difference for your garden I would at least try to find a solution for both parts. Maybe they can still find another place for it as long as it is young...I miss that big tree, it has been here when I moved into the house 35 plus years ago and it will be interesting to see what happens next year. Thank you all for your kind words about that planter. nicholsworth once said that I'm an experimental gardener and that is true in some ways. But mostly I have a sudden idea and I never hesitate to follow my head...I got two new aloe and immediately decided to combine them with my already existing plants. Canada is not well known for succulents :-) Might be the climate that does not really fit for such plants. You could keep them alive with plant lights in winter or let them sleep like hosta. I will try both methods this year. But our winter is not as long as yours..Sansevieria and aloe are definitely ones you could try because they grow inside without problems. I spent this rainy weekend with putting most of my succulents in terracotta pots and I got some kind of plastic tray from our gardener which holds 12 pots and I can water the pots in those trays. So I could arrange them without all those little plates under them and it looks much nicer now.

It is a great idea. You might consider showing it at the rehearsal dinner where there will be a smaller group of people. This will give your brother the opportunity to see the entire video without interuption. Then, you can decide whether or not you want to show it at the reception as well.

I agree with Gellchom's comments about keeping the clips short and clean, though you can edit if necessary.

if you really want it to be longer, it might be more palatable to show it in snippets--six 3-minute clips instead of one 18-minute clip.

I'd vote for contacting the bride or her family WITHOUT contacting your brother. Forge your own relationship with them, and surprise him!

GREAT ideas, tips & hints! I will definitely keep it short & sweet, screen it at the rehearsal dinner, and remind the guys of their audience - never thought of any of those issues. Thanks SO MUCH for your input, all of you.
